Hobgoblin Clone

Post #1 made 14 years ago
Style: Seems to fit American Amber Ale profile best in Beersmith(should be English Brown Ale)
Name: Hobgoblin Clone
Yeast: WLP002
Fermentation Temperature: 20deg~ish(room temp)
Original Gravity: 1.058
Total IBUs: 38.8
Colour(EBC): 21.8
Efficiency at end of boil: ??
Mash length: 90mins
Boil Length: 60mins
Vessel Type: 33litre Youngs plastic fementer converted to boiler
Source/Credits: LordStilton
Notes/Instructions/Comments: My first BIAB attempt and I got kind of screwed up with volumes and very bad efficiencies etc so some of the info I'm posting is from directly from Beersmith as I ended up with 16.5 litres in fermenter which I topped up to 20litres although I had 19.5 post boil~never quite figured out where the 3 litres went, seemed like a lot to lose to the hops/debris etc...

Volumes etc.

Vessel Volume: 33litres
Vessel Diameter (cm):35.5 at the top
Water Required (L or gal): Not sure because I topped up fermenter
Mash Temperature (C): 68deg
Volume at End of Boil (L):19.5
Volume into Fermenter (L): 16.5
Brew Length (L):20
Total Grain Bill (g):5240

Grains - Colours - Percentages and/or Weight (g)

Grain 1: Marris Otter 5.9EBC 5000g
Grain 2: Crystal malt 118EBC 200g(I actually used 80g crystal and 120g Caramel because its all I had)
Grain 3: Black Malt 985EBC 10g
Grain 4: Chocolate Malt 886 EBC 30g

Hops - AA% - IBUs - Weight (g) at Minutes

Hop 1: 48g Styrian Goldings(5.4%AA) 60minutes
Hop 2: 15g Styrian Goldings(5.4%AA) 15minutes
Hop 3: 15g Styrian Goldings(5.4%AA) 2minutes

Irish Moss added at last 15mins of boil

Hi Rockbotton, I wasn't very impressed with it. I think it may have been my choice of yeast but I'm not sure. The brewer who gave it to me swears by this recipe but he uses wyeast 1469.(I trust his judgement). I've just done another clone that I made up based on the brewing network interview with the wychwood brewer as follows.
5.4kg Maris otter
.45kg crystal 145
.12kg chocolate1060
.1kg wheat
30g ekg 5% 60mins
70g styrian goldings3.3% 15mins
my 15min hops should have been 50% cascade but I didn't have any.
this is definitely close to the original based on sample from fermenter but only time will tell.
thing is I think I'm using the wychwood yeast or something damn close. I contacted brewlab.co.UK and asked for a suitable yeast and I got a slant with hobgoblin written on it. The guys on jimsbeerkit seem to think these guys can supply the original strain from what I've read.

I am interested to see your assessment of this recipe. I would definitely like to brew a Hobgoblin clone.

+1

Also did I read that right that you converted a plastic fermenter into a boiler??

If that's the case, does that work good for you?

Rockbotton, I'll be sure to update when it's fully conditioned. I usually 'try' to leave them at least a month in the bottle before I start drinking.
Kostass/Kingy yes, the HB shops here sell them already converted with tap, a single element and a useless hop strainer http://www.thehomebrewcompany.ie/index. ... cts_id=576
I stuck an extra element into it to help reach boil quicker. Its a good starter kit but I've since purchased a buffalo 40litre which I'm lookin forward firing up. The 33litre boiler is a bit too small for 20litre BIAB batches.

Hi RB, just had a bottle of it last night. Not quite right, needs some time to mellow I think, hoppier than a hobgoblin should be. Also had very poor head retention. Think I'm moving it out to the shed for a month or so and I'll go back to it again. Unfortunately I cant recommend this brew at the moment...

Brewing BB's version right now except using Nugget hops instead of perle. BB uses MO, dark crystal, and chocolate. I settled on 11# of MO, .5# crystal 120, and .25# chocolate for a 5 gallon batch....I'll report back in about a month or so.

Thanks Lars for the update.

Glad to hear your are getting one going Todd. I guess I need to jump in with you guys and try a recipe also. I really like this beer but it appears it is not an easy one to duplicate.

Being a man of my word, here's an update:

I bottled this 11 days ago so this is just a first impression:

Yum!

Full disclosure: Hob Goblin is not (to the best of my knowledge) available in the States and I have never had one, so I have nothing to compare my recipe to. I will say that I am a huge fan of bitters and this is one of the better ones that I have brewed.

Hey Todd,
Hobgoblin is available in the US. I have a store in Florence, SC that keeps them in stock. They are not cheap, about 4.50 a bottle but it is a good beer. One that I would like to a homebrew that is very close. I really like the beer.

I still have not tried a recipe yet, fermentor has been full and time has been short.

Well, I stand corrected. We have a local store (Beers of the World) which, as the name implies, imports beer from all over the world. I just checked on-line and it appears they stock several Wychwood beers including HobGoblin! Reckon I need to wander outside of the Belgian section next time I visit that store.
