Heat Proof Burner Bases

Post #1 made 14 years ago
So,

When you use a gas burner, and you crank it up, it produces some heat that is directed down, into whatever its sitting on,

What should you use to make the heat shield?

Fibreboard?

I'm thinking of building up a base with besa blocks, then a concrete-board type sheet, then some clinker bricks or something else on top of that...

I used to use a large cast iron hotplate, but aside from the greasy black issue, which is a no no for beer, the poor wooden bench that this was placed on, now has griddle marks on it, good for steak, but not good for a work bench :)

Ideally I'd like to perhaps use the bigger pavers that you use in a pizza oven, but I'm not sure where to source them from

Sandstone pavers from the hammer shop will do the job. Cost around $6 each. I use a couple for cooking pizza in the bbq.

I'd steer Away from anything concrete or fibre board, these have a tendency to pop or explode when exposed to prolonged heat.

Yes, a friend recommended anything that had been kilned, ie clinker bricks/pavers

The sandstone pavers... are they actually sandstone or are they a sand/concrete manufactured paver?
