A member over at HBT named "ScubaSteve" experimented for quite a while with stainless and determining the optimal size mesh only to finally give up and go back to using a bag.

I believe the conclusion was that a mesh fine enough to contain the grain properly would plug up and not flow liquid while a mesh course enough to allow a good flow through but still contain the grain would allow too much flour/fine particles to enter the wort. I don't think he ever found a good compromise.

One other thing about cloth bags vs. Metal screen bag. Flexibility.

The cloth can move and unclog it self, Metal mesh cannot.

Been there, done this, read the book, saw the movie, and got the tee shirt!!

I've got a bag from Jeff at bagbrewer too, it's a few years old but still cranking along. As far as cleaning it, I just hang it over the chainlink fence and take a garden hose to it....easy peasy!
