Kettle costs?

Post #1 made 16 years ago
Folks,
I'm wondering how much you've paid for your kettle? In the FAQ, there's Small (30 L ), Medium (50 L) and Large (80 L ), but I actually use a 19 L pot from big double ewe (for all you foreigners, that's a large chain store!) which cost me just AU$20, but it is great for MiniBIAB (/shameless plug! ;) ).

So here's a start:
Size Volume Cost
Mini 19 L AU$20 (Ralph)
Small 30 L
Medium 50 L
Large 80 L

And yet another! Jeezus, no wonder the breweries are up in arms!

I actually have two legit stainless firkins, have resisted the temptation to 3-V so far, maybe I should slice one up to see if it is fire and brimstone after all to do that, or if it might be something else! ;)

Ok, so to recap, we're at:
Size Volume Cost
Mini 19 L AU$20
Small 30 L
Medium 50 L $free * 2
Medium ex- US 15 gal $free
Large 80 L

I guess it isn't looking good for kitchen equipment suppliers??!!

Ps. Nice score Jimmy, thank goodness for ex- services catering and good neighbourly relations? :)

I ended up with 2 x 70 L Robinox stockpots from AllQuip in Australia which work out being a great size. Can do two double batches at once if needs be.

Stainless ones are $300 AUD though. You can get aluminium ones far cheaper. 50 L ones are $85 AUD and 80 L are $110 AUD. Very good solid pots though. Postage is about $35 AUD from memory.

BeerBelly in South Australia and Grain & Grape in Victoria also sell them by the look of things.

Edit: Just saw your list Ralp so the following is just stainless prices from Allquip but the brew shops above might have better prices and will of course have heaps of other stuff you can get without increasing postage costs.

Material: Stainless
Mini 20 L: $146 AUD + postage
Small 30 L:
Medium 50 L: $215 AUD + postage
Large 70 L: $300 AUD + postage

50L Chinese s\s $55 from local Asian supermarket (Kongs Vic Park)

The handle came off the lid, but the handles on the pot are solidly riveted on.

I'm glad I went for 50L, a good 23L stout with 8Kg grain bill just about fills it up, 40L would have been just a bit too small.
