SS mesh bag

Post #1 made 15 years ago
Hi guys, What I'm thinking of is using a SS mesh to make a bag. Does anyone know the aperture micron of voile so I can match it with the stainless?

I was thinking of going with 415 micron but I can get smaller if needed.

Cheers,

Theres no reason you couldn't go the s/s if you can get it fine enough. I think the best bet to confirm size is to go to a fabric store and get a bit of viole, they may even have a sample they can give you, then you can compare.
Bring on the stainless! :D

I've often thought about this. If you find a SS mesh that may work make sure to post some links. My idea (which I copied from somewhere else... can't find the link) was cutting the bottom out of a 3-4 gal bucket and replacing it with the mesh (and most likely reinforce it with two crossed solid steel bars). The problem would lie in that when pulling it you would only get drip-draining. Putting pressure on the grains would be difficult, though a weighted plunger-type apparatus might be far superior to the hand squeezing we all do now. Perhaps even some 10 lbs weights that have a corrosion free glazing would easily stack on top of the grains. Anyway, I look forward to reading about your projects success!!

Thanks guys, I've done some searching for the info but couldn't find it so I'm going to give it a bash anyway using the 415 micron mesh. You can get alot finer than that but I'm thinking it should be ok. Maybe the crush can be altered to suit anyway?

I'll pick up the mesh tommorow. I've already scrounged some cadmium free silver solder from work so if I get time I'll get started on the weekend. I'll make sure I take pics and post them here.

The mesh is $62.70 for a 1m x 1.25m piece so plenty big enough to get 2 out of (which is good if I stuff the first one when soldering).

Cheers, Mat.

Wasn't there something about "termite mesh" or something to shield a baseboard of a house against termites? Here is a quick link http://www.termimeshhawaii.com This stuff gives me ideas. Hey maybe BIAW Brew In A Wire.

Yep that's the stuff.. It's where I got the idea from. Termimesh has been used in WA for years but they don't / won't supply to the public. When I rang them they put me onto a supplier.

I've had some off cuts before to use for other stuff. It's really good.

I took an image the voile material I use on a microscope at work this morning.

The gaps in the material are ~210 um and each strand of material is ~125 um (the scale bar in the bottom right is 200 um in case its a little blurry).

If you can get a finer SS mesh for roughly the same price, you may want to consider doing that.

Cool idea though. Keep us posted.

That's exactly what I was after thanks mate..

I ended up getting the 310 micron mesh with 200 micron wire. Basically because of cost.
It cost me AU$70. To get 210 micron would have been AU$100. A bit much for a "trial" project.
Got all the bits just need to put it together.

Cheers, Mat.

Exactly

Serious piece of kit those braumeisters, I'd be well into a 50l model

+1 to what Bob said. I am very, very interested in your SS bag results. If you reinforce the sides of it you could make a simple plunger like apparatus to use to "squeez" out the bag pre-boil.

No probs. I'll keep you up to date on the progress.

Not too fussed about "squeezing" it. I've seen a lot of comments saying there is not much to be gained from it. Plan is to sit it above to drain while waiting for the boil. You can't really see it in the pics but the base is slightly conical to aid in directing the drainage to the centre.

Just need to read up on efficiency calcs so I can give you some numbers.

Cheers, Mat.

What type of wood are you using for the top ring?
I used MDF mate. It's not waterproof but the only time it will see water is during washing. I might try to get something to waterproof it though.

Cheers, Mat.

Mat, what did you use to "weld/solder" the mesh together? I'm very interested in this, after mashing you could also use the bag to contain your hops during the boil.

I used Dow Corning 732 Silicon. It is FDA approved. Wanted to get it spot welded but was too hard & tried to solder it but didn't work. (Would if you had the right gear though)

So when is the maiden voyage? If the silicon doesn't hold up you may be able to sew it with SS wire.

I'm also really keen to hear how you go using the S/S mesh! I'd love a photo of the trub at the end of your boil! This innovation, combined with Wizard's S/S autosyphon could really change the way I do things!
