Why does using hop sock affect grain quantity in BIABacus?

Post #1 made 12 years ago
I just finished my 3rd BIAB and so am still getting used to the BIABacus. I think its an amazing tool and really appreciate all the hard work that must have gone into it!
The more I use it I'm sure the more questions I'll have and hopefully there'll be someone on here to give me some answers or point me in the right direction.
So, the first of many questions; I was recently playing with BIABacus whilst putting together my 3rd BIAB and noticed that when I enter a 'N' into the 'hop sock used' it increases the amount of the grain bill, quite substantially? Can anyone tell why more grain is needed if you don't use a hopsock?

Hops absorb a lot of wort. You can easily lose 1 gallon of wort to 1 pound of hops (don't ask me how I know  )

So, if you can contain the hops in a bag and later squeeze that bag as dry as you can, then you have minimize your KFL in the BIABacus. Watch how the KFL increases when you say NO to Mr. HOP SOCK. :argh: He don't like it much.

Here's a good link to read; http://www.biabrewer.info/viewtopic.php ... 863#p25936

If you notice, the TWN also decreases. You're just making less beer to hit the same desired VIF due to better trub control like MS states.

Awesome, thanks guys

The link was very useful, cheers MS!

I've not used any other brewing software, only the BIABacus, so I'm obviously bias but it's a bloody good tool I'm sure you'll agree

I think all those involved in developing it need a big pat on the back and a beer :salute:. Hopefully as I gain more and more experience I'll be able to contribute to the forum to help others!

Cheers,
