Thanks a heap ian - much appreciated :salute:. I have written to BJCP so hopefully permission will come through soon.

One last post before I go and freshen up  ...

Maybe the equipment should read in the following format...

40 L Pot (35cm diameter)

10 US gallon Keg (20 inch diameter)

That way all critical info is there.

(Nice job btw Stu)

I noticed that "Approximate Mash Volume" is now a user-to-enter field in the history

Of two minds about that, the figure that we use is 0.66 of the grain bill as displacement... which is a fairly well accepted number... I think BS2 uses .652

The only reason to track the true mash volume is if we're planning on being able to adjust that constant. If that is the case, then I should pull out that constant and expose it (along the lines of an Advanced value) and then it would make sense to track the true value as we can then derive the real grain displacement value, which can then be averaged, and used to improve the real world performance.

The trick is grain displacement does not vary from system to system, but rather is inherrant to the actual grain

In my Maxi-BIAB experiments I found there was grain dry displacement and grain wet displacement, and grain dry volume.

Dry Volume is how big a bucket you need to hold the grain
Dry Displacement is how many L the grain displaces when you first dump it in
Wet Displacement is how many L the grain displaces once its wet (and presumably has absorbed water)

Interestingly, Maxi-BIAB uses 0.7 for the wet displacement, as I did some googling and found that value...

Maybe we should pull it out as a modifiable constant, and then we can really work it out :)

Jul 09 Update

I've added the Approximate Mash Volume History fields to the unit conversion routine

I also finished the KG/Lb conversion so the History grain weight converts

I also fixed up the efficiency/correction factor History calculations to properly convert

I also added a rough Recipe Template tab. The idea is just make that appear how you want the recipe template to be, and the copy macro will copy it (as is demo'd by my previous posts. Not sure if we should or shouldn't do the bolding in the headings.

I also had a fiddle with the Styles just to calcualte a Style (No) field... but its no biggy

Hi ya Stu,

Nice work mate!

I wasn't sure on whether to have the Total Mash Volume as a field but it might be interesting in 6 months or do to see what figures people are getting?

So, with the Recipe template, do you want that laid out in table form? If so, I'll work on it.

I'm going to do another post here next of things we have forgotten.

Cheers,
Pat

Well, its approximately in table form now ;)

Just edit up the Recipe Tab to match what you want, if you select the cells and copy them, then when you paste into the forum, you get what I did before

The macro we make will basically just select a range and copy it

I've noticed that it is easy to miss a lot of stuff in this thread. For example sig and smyrna made a few suggestions or asked questions yesterday that we haven't addressed yet. If something slips past, add it here.

Things Needing to Be Completed

1. Style Guide Incorporation
2. Recipe Report Incorporation
3. Layout (highest priority for now is finding four decent colours).

Things Now Broken

1. Comments: Many are no longer visible or the box has changed in size. Any ideas?

Unanswered Posts

1. Programming suggestions made by Sig here. (Pat unable to answer.)
2. Scaling versus Weight question by Sig made here (Might need more detail Sig as I am having trouble seeing what you mean.)
3. Calculated Cell Protection: stux has given feedback on this. Still wondering if Sig can find a way around this 'Advanced Button' proposal that would hide some tabs and protect calculated fields.
4. Colour suggestions need to be made. (I have checked out colour links made and will explore them more shortly.)

Things to Consider for Future Versions

1. Make Ingredient Tables Unrestricted.
2. Make Brew History Unrestricted - like ianh has.
3. Consider adding Ingredient List - Still retain the 'generic grain' option though.

stux: Okay, I will have a crack at this stux.

ian: The estimate mash volume is still calculated so all is good there. The only question is whether to have it shaded or not in Brew History. It doesn't hurt to have it shaded and we all might learn something - you never know! If we don't have user input there, it will mean that Row 56 and 50 would have to be copied across. I reckon leave as is for now.

(Also: Please see post immediately above and add anything to it that I've missed.)

Here's a few layout fixes (bugger all) to stux's last post.

1. Got rid of black lines.
2. Shaded "Dr SMurto's Golden Ale" and "03-Jul-11" for consistency.
3. Changed the 'Style' and 'Mash' area at top a bit.

I will look at the Recipe Template tab next and colours.

I'll keep posting up colour changes regularly. Has anyone had any light bulbs on this before I start? The next thing I will try is from Bob's colour wheel link here. I am going to try having the dot at the bottom. Do this and click on 'Light Page Example'. I have no idea what it will be like so will just do a little test run and post it as a pic. The more things we try, the better I suppose.

To me the trub values that can be changed should be the volume rather than the percentages. Volumes are what you measure.

Similar with the Evap corr Factor, it should be removed and the evap per hour is what you factor in.

The grain absorption factor should be fixed.

I personally find it very hard to follow any calculations as they all have elements like Vs_Strike_Water_Temp2,Vs_Strike_Water_Temp which mean nothing or similar.

cheers

Agreed, its actually irrelevant

What is far more important is your evaporation rate and the absorption rate as those will actually affect the brew

I was actually thinking about this the other day,

the grain weight field would actually work just as well if you put grams, lbs, KGs or percent into the original grain bill weight field...

as the grain bill calculator ONLY works on the grain weight ratio

Great post Ian :peace:

Vs_Strike_Water_Temp2,Vs_Strike_Water_Temp

Yep, I'm with you on following the formulas but I think stux has done this to make the whole programming side easier (and safer) in the long run. These things make sense to the computer guys but are very hard for us ;). What is needed, down the track at least, is a review of field names. For example, Vs stands for 'Volumes Sheet' but this is currently 'BIAB Calculator'. I have no idea what the bolded bit above means :P .

The computer guys seem to be able to work with it for the moment but it is something that should be looked at later once this particular sheet is finished. A table explaining what each field name means is needed.

I am also pretty much in the dark here. Only today I learned to keep an eye on the bit to the left where you type in info. eg. Click on cell b20 (the volume figure into bottles/kegs) and you'll see "Vs_Brew_Length" in the bit to the left - that being the cell name.

Definitely something that needs to be looked at later.

Trub / Evap Correction Factors etc

This is a valid point. The addition of these 'factor' fields actually doesn't solve the problem it was trying to. The idea was to create a basic 'standard' for new users but the addition of these fields will not do this. For example, if I download a recipe that has a 'Kettle Trub Percentage of 5.00, how would I know the 'standard' is 17.95?

This requires a whole new re-think before release. Excellent point!

Grain Absorption Factor

We are probably not seeing what the other is seeing on this one. I am seeing it as 'fixed' (as in non-adjustable) except by advanced users. However in 'Brew History' what the brewer can do is measure their mash volume once they have doughed in and record that figure. Later they might find that their average (see Cell I50) is different from the 'fixed' figure we are currently using in cell B50. If enough people say, "I am getting a higher reading," then we should look at changing our default in future versions.

More posts are needed like yours Ian so we can more easily see what is not right, clear or confusing. That's always the problem with creating this stuff - you assume everyone else sees what you see.

Thanks,
Pat

Here's a layout and colour test. (I've tried three ideas this arvo and all were shockers.) The problem has been too many dark-coloured fields so in this attempt, I have tried 'dotting' to reduce the colours needed by one. It might be a step in the right direction but nowhere near good enough.

I'm going to post two versions up here...

V1: Pretty much what was posted here last - only colour changes and some re-wording of Cells A6:H7

V2: Shows an error. All I did was...

Step 1 - Cut and copied old 'Diameter of Kettle' units (old cell B38) to B14
Step 2 - Deleted old 'Diameter of Kettle' line and now errors show in new line 38. Not sure why?

Questions for Computer Guys

1. Can you guys use one of the above two versions from now unless you have already started doing stuff as I haven't made any major changes - pretty much just colours but these take a while to do?

2. I want to focus on the Recipe Template now. If you are also working on the sheet now, how big a problem is it to transfer my template to whatever the latest sheet might be?

For example, I am already thinking of giving Sheet 1 Cell B10 the name 'RecipeName' and then putting '= 'RecipeName' somewhere in the Recipe Template.

3. Can I set it out as more than two columns?

stux: Saw your post above and I would agree with the Version 3.0 stuff. Let's see what a few others think as well and then I'll do another "Where We Are At" post.

The Evap correction factor has a strong correlation to the surface area of the pot, but it depends on vigour of boil, and even atmospheric conditions, so it needs a compensator. For the puposes of a general user calculator we need to be able to derive the evaporation from their equipment parameters rather than a fixed value

With the brew history it should be possible for someone to determine how far they diverge from the average evaporation based on pot diameter, and that should work fairly well
The grain absorption factor should be fixed.
Grain absorption depends on your draining practices... do you squeeze, etc and should be a L/KG value
I personally find it very hard to follow any calculations as they all have elements like Vs_Strike_Water_Temp2,Vs_Strike_Water_Temp which mean nothing or similar.
Well... that's a bad example :)

But basically, I started naming cells... and then formulas...

Vs_Strike_Water_Temp2 and Vs_Strike_Water_Temp are the Volumes Strike Water Temp values.

#2 is calculated using an alternate formula to the default. If you click on the cell label you can change the formula

Its really not going to be practical to rename every "Vs_" field to "BC_" ;)

The computer guys seem to be able to work with it for the moment but it is something that should be looked at later once this particular sheet is finished. A table explaining what each field name means is needed.

For example, if I download a recipe that has a 'Kettle Trub Percentage of 5.00, how would I know the 'standard' is 17.95?
There should probably be a "Reset" button which will reset the values to the defaults. I have actually already started doing this. There is a "Reset_For_Distribution" macro I was working on

Actually, a better name would be "Use Defaults"

Anyway, with a recipe, you would enter hop bill and grain bill details, mash temp, and the idea was/is that a user just enters their packaging quantity and diameter, and they get a scaled recipe.

Now the problem is if someone changes the default trub/boiloff modifiers, and then uploads a recipe, and someone else downloads that and scales the recipe without realising its not defaults...

Obviously with the recipes that BIABrewer uploads they should be set with the distribution parameters.

Perhaps move the kettle diameter and other system specific values into the Equipment tab

then the only thing to change on the main tab is the packaged volume

Being able to change the kettle and fermenter trub percentages is important as they can vary a lot based on the system. For example, I no-chill. This means I end up with LESS kettle trub and MORE fermenter trub. Without the modifiers I have to edit the cells.

A normal user can not be expected to edit the cells

This requires a whole new re-think before release. Excellent point!

Because each of the History formulas depend on the old History diameter value which you've now deleted

Because there is no longer a History of the diameter it would be necessary to chang the "#REF" to point to the kettle diameter ("Vs_Diameter_Of_Kettle")

The problem with this is that you might not use the same kettle every brew... or you might upgrade from your 35cm kettle to your 45cm kettle... but when you do this your brew history becomes innacurate unless you are keeping the dimensions in the History.

Anther example of why this is a bad idea is that the 2 example brew historys are agianst 40cm pots, but what happens when a user updates the equipment profile?

Essentially the values in the brew history shouldn't change when the current settings get changed.

Keeping the current (at the time) diameter in the brew history is not a problem as the current value can be copied when iniitalizing the actual

perhaps we could hide the row if you don't want to see it?

Also, the thoughts on the trub and evaporation modifiers have made me realise how important it is to hide the modifiers for beginners...

BUT we must find a way to automagically set the defaults...

I was thinking perhaps if we stored the last spreadsheet user in a magic cell... then when the spreadsheet was opened we can check if the user has changed. If it has we can offer to reset the characteristics to defaults... otherwise we wouldn't bother the user

Will read the above properly soon Stu but will be uploading another version soon.

If renaming fields is laborious, I will do it. I have already just added about 20 names just to get the Recipe Template working so this is important!

A major priority with the Calc is to get new brewers looking/studying their brew day so measuring mash volume is something to be encouraged. (It is not about getting people to capture data for me - it is about learning/improving/educating). It is not a big deal and erring on side of 'learning' should always be the priority.

All existing software is poor on presentation and consideration of new brewers and/or first-time users. That won't be us though will it  :champ:

(BTW, I hope that me being able to use multiple columns is goint ot be okay in the Recipe template, otherwise I have just wasted the last several hours :argh:)

(Second note: We are going to assume brewers are not going to change their equipment. If they do, then they have to re-start their brew history or take an educated guess. No software can solve that scenario.)

Third Note!: I know it doesn't look great and this is why we need to concentrate on this layout and colour issue. More time needs to be spent on this problem. It is very hard to solve. I have tried suggestions offered so far and none have worked.

Names are hard to copy. If you want to add some names, be sure to upload the sheet to stop people working on redundant sheets ;)

Otherwise who ever is merging the sheet in will have to manually add each name you've defined after they work out which name is missing
3. Can I set it out as more than two columns?
Yes. But be aware, the way it is when the sheet gets copied you lose the spaceing, you can always copy the selected cells and paste it into a message to see how it will look

You might notice that I had a third column with Units. This is a good idea beacause we can have the Units use the current setting. Alternatively I could also support displaying both units... but its easy enough to enter recipes in the right units now

Recipe Template work so far....

Named Sheet1/Cell B10 "RecipeName"
Named Sheet1/Cell B15 "RecipeSource"
Named Sheet1/Cell I15 "RecipeLink"
Named Sheet1/Cell A59 "RecipeNotes"
Named Sheet1/Cell C14 "PotType"
Named Sheet1/Cell D14 "PotVolume"
Named Sheet1/Cell I14 "MashTime"
Named Sheet2/Cell M17 "TotalIBU"

Changed Sheet3/Cells M10:17 to 1 decimal point

Deleted Pot Height from Sheet 1 and moved Mash to left. (Step mash not considered)

Named Sheet2/Cell A6 "Grain1"
Same logic through to A12
Named Sheet2/Cell F6 "GrainWeight1"
Same logic through to F12

Just noticed I am going to have to add another column on the left of the Recipe template and un-merge and re-merge nearly every single thing I have done. (Lesson learned - start on the hops first!)

Can you computer guys tell me if what I have done will even work? :P
