I'm aging my cube!

Post #1 made 13 years ago
Following on from my comments Here, I thought I should pull my finger out and do something about it!!

The wort is from a coopers Pale Ale that I did back in January. This is the 1st cube of a double batch that I did on the day in question. The 2nd one has already been fermented and bottled. I'll be keeping a couple of bottles of this to compare it one day down the track when I ferment the 1st cube. Although, I don't know how true the comparison will be due to the aging in the bottle etc. But at least it will be some sort of comparison.

I'll be checking the cube for any air that it may 'suck' in.

As the CPA is not a highly hopped beer, I may need to set another cube aside that I have done of an APA or similar highly hopped beer in to see if the hop profile changes much over time.

Does anyone have anything to add that I should do or any questions about what I am trying to achieve?

Good Day Housecat, Good Luck, and I hope you find the "aged" No-chill comes out smoother and more refined than straight no-chill! It has for me, over 2 batches now.

I have been thinking of doing this for some time now! Maybe it's time for a collaborative experiment? Keep us in the loop!
tap 1 Raspberry wine
tap 2 Bourbon Barrel Porter
tap 3 Czech Pilsner
tap 4 Triple IPA 11% ABV

Pipeline: Mulled Cider 10% ABV

Thanks guys,

It just so happens that I was looking over at AHB and I found this thread.
Looks like we aren't the only ones asking the big questions!
One of the guys is about to brew a 3 year old cube.
The general consensus over on AHB seems to be that aging a cube results in better beer.

Looks like my experiment is over before it has started lol!

I may as well set this one aside anyway and see how it fairs.

I don't think you can say its all over :)

All the evidence is anecdotal on AHB, just like here :)

NO ONE as far as I can tell has done any controlled experiment on purpose, its just hearsay, including mine "damn this beer is great... far better than the first batch I fermented 12 months earlier"

Or is it ;)

I think it was, but I haven't had any cubes last past a fermenter being available for a while now... :)

Hey Stux,

Thanks for the pep talk :D just so you know, I hadn't lost the faith, it was more of a tongue in cheek post :P

You are right, none of the posters on AHB actually did it on purpose and none of them have shown any tasting notes or "side by side" tastings, that have been reported.

I am going to do this experiment and keep a couple of bottles from the first batch so hopefully it can be as true side by side testing as can be allowed, under the circumstances.
We have a case swap here in Adelaide soon and this is my swap beer so I will be able to get quite a few (up to 25) different peoples tasting notes to reference later when I ferment the second cube.

Me thinks I'll swap the second cube next year to see what they reckon. Would you let them know so they knew what I am trying to achieve or should I keep mum so they don't try and compare it in their memory and cloud their opinion?

Time will tell!
