Evening all

5th BIAB in the fermenter.
This is the 1st time I've used Protafloc. Must say I'm impressed, I got a much better hot break with it than the Irish Moss I used to use.
Didn't rinse the bleach from my barrel properly for my last brew and it developed a medicinal taste. Got some Sodium Metabisulphite to use as a final rinse, this time I'm going to make sure it's clean and fresh before this one goes in. I don't want to dump another brew. My stock is seriously low, had to go and buy some beer from the shop :sad:

I just copied one of my recent posts from AHB.

I generally use Bleach/White vinegar at the rate of 1.5ml each per litre to sanitise my fermenters and cubes. I don't rinse afterwards but just invert to drain for a minute.

If worried about bleach carry over just do the sums, Bleach is about 5% Sodium Hyperchorite, you put about say 40ml in a 25 litre fermenter, empty it and let it drain say 2ml carry over you then add about 23 litres to brew.

=0.05*2*(40/25000)/23000 comes out at about 7 parts per billion

Sorry it's all in metric but I think it works out to 0.25 fluid ounces per imperial gallon of regular bleach and of white vinegar

ianh mentioned above that he uses Bleach and white vinegar to create a no rinse sanitizing solution. While it is possible to create this no rinse sanitizing solution, IT IS VERY IMPORTANT to know HOW to mix this correctly without killing you.!!

FATALITY WARNING
Mixing white vinegar (or any acid) with undiluted bleach (I consider even 5% bleach solution from the store undiluted) will result in a chlorine gas release which can kill you.

Mixing instructions
When mixing this solution, please mix it in the following manner:
1. Prepare the full amount of water you plan to use.
2. Pour the bleach into the water and mix thoroughly.
3. Pour the vinegar into the water and mix thoroughly.

This will result in a no-rinse sanitizing solution.

I personally prefer iodophor solution instead since I won't kill anybody if somebody sees me mix it and tries to copy my method.

Anyway, buying beer is nothing to be ashamed of .. I do it regularly. Most often I do it because I want something specific though, not because of a low inventory.
Hi sigurdur

No rinse sanitizers are available but up until now I've never thought about them as I've never had a problem. I can " borrow " Sod Met from work so if it works ok as a final rinse then to remove the chlorine smell then I'll stick with it :)

Hi Ian

I used to work in a flour mill and had the " pleasure " of inhaling the fumes of a bleaching agent. One of the pieces of kit that we used sprang a leak......
Was not impressed and had to go to the hospital as a precaution so I'll give it a miss for now.
What you suggest is effective but should be done with CAUTION
