Please check this before I brew

Hello all!

I am new to BIAB, and this will be my first brew. I have a few questions.

1. I believe I have done everything right to make sure my numbers are correct in the sheet, but would like someone to look it over and tell me for sure.

2. When I do this same setup in beersmith, my strike temp comes out much higher than what it does in here. 159* vs 153* is this right? Just so everyone knows, I am using a 15g SS Brewtech pot.

3. In my hop profile, I am not getting the 60 IBUs that is being called for with the same numbers in oz that I am putting into BS. Does DH not take into account IBU's? I am also supposed to whirlpool the centennial for 60 min afterwards, but I dont see how I would put that into this.

The file looks good to go!

Remember to fill in the Cells as you Brew, and Save the File, When Finished, as it will be VERY Helpful, if you have a problem with the Final Beer!

FWH can be entered between 60-90 mins., DH as 0 mins., flame-out hops can add IBU. How long will the 0 mins. hops be in the kettle before cooling or pulling?

Section D VAW can be 22.05 L based on your Section K or just enter 60 IBU (but not both)

So my numbers on the hops are off b/c i didnt know how to add them.

The Centennial is the one that should be whirlpooled for 60 min after flame out.

Hop schedule is like this:

0.94 oz - Galena [12.50 %] - Boil 60.0 min - [Hop]
0.94 oz - Galena [12.50 %] - Boil 10.0 min - [Hop]
0.94 oz - Galena [12.50 %] - Boil 5.0 min - [Hop]
1:30 hours - End of Boil
1:30 hours - Steep Aroma Hops
0.94 oz - Centennial [10.00 %] - Steep/Whirlpool 60.0 min - [Hop]
2:30 hours - End of Steep/Aroma Phase

3 days - dry hop - 1oz each Equinox, Mosaic, Citra
1 day - dry hop - .31 Equinox, 1oz Mosaic, 2oz Citra

Hope that clears things up. Not sure how I put it in, so thats why the numbers were off.

There may be a number of ways to do this. I am thinking to use at least 2 hop socks. The 60 mins. hops could be pulled at flame out. If you have a way to add additional hops to a 2nd hop sock, then start at 10 mins. then add 5 mins., then add 0 mins., kept this hop sock in until end of 60 mins. whirlpool.

The screen shot shows the calculations used for IBU's. I added 9 mins. to the 10 and 5 mins. additions for calculation purposes, 9 mins. for the whirlpool.

So im currently brewing this beer and i mashed in at 154* like the calculator said. My temp dropped to 143, so i hit it with some low heat until it got back up to around 147, and then wrapped it in a fleece blanket. after wrapping, the temp has climbed slowly to 156*. It this normal? I am using a 15 Gal SS brewtech pot, but I would never have thought the temp would RISE without heat on it. Does this happen to anyone else?

It's hard to say what was actually going on, were you constantly stirring while adding the heat? There could have just been a "cold" spot where your thermometer was reading .. giving a false appearance of low temperature. When, in fact it could have had a very large hot spot that was yet to stabilize(likely at the bottom near your burner).

If you were dilligent with the stirring, if your burner and/or pot has a lot of heavy gage metal, it could store a lot of heat and slowly transfer it to your mash even after it was shut down.

Thanks for the reply Mad and Rick. I am thinking the pot is made well and the bottom actually kept the heat and then it got hotter as well. I finished right on where my efficiency should be for my mash(76.3% / 76.2%). My numbers were off on going into the fermentor due to trub in the bottom of my kettle. It was supposed to be a 5.25 Gal batch, and I ended up with 4.75 Gal into Ferm... I will have to keep that in mind later and change it in my profile.
Does anyone know what section I change that in?

Other than that I think my numbers were close for my first time. I put in the adjustment for temp loss, so that should be right next time.
