Brew Better Beer Book - low integrity recipes?

Post #1 made 10 years ago
Hi

I was browsing in a book shop yesterday at the homebrew books and I found one that looked pretty good, it was hardback and was very nicely produced with nice looking pictures of beer (beer porn? ;) ) and for each style it had a recipe.
The book was called Brewing Better Beer by Emma Christensen, not sure if anyone has a copy or seen it?

Anyway, my question was that in all the recipes, for the hops, it had the hope type, the weight and the AA% of the hop.
What it didn't have was the IBUs for each hop. Is this an issue for the recipe for someone to use it?

Thanks

Hi Chesl73

I don't know the book you're referring to but it does sound like it might have good quality recipes because it includes the AA% which others usually leave out.

The IBUs are calculated by the AA% of the hop and how long it is boiled. If you boil one hop for 60 min and it creates 50 IBUs, a 30min boil of that hop would create around 40. If you play around with the hop section of biabicus you can see what I mean.

You can input the hop schedule into biabicus to get the IBUs for each addition with the information provided to you. There is no specific IBU for each hop but instead an IBU for each addition and total IBU for the whole brew which the recipe should state.

I hope this makes sense.
