4th BIAB - lessons learned.

Post #1 made 11 years ago
Hi guys,
I did a Zombie Dust clone on Sunday, apart from one error it really went smoothly and I was happy with the session. A few quick points that might help new BIABers.

1. I've started using a paint stirrer to agitate the mash and it's fantastic!
2. After overshooting my mash temp (while reheating after pitching grain...not sure how that happened!!) I've since bought a thermapen, I look forward to 4 second accurate readings. With my current thermometer you have to hold your tongue right so it won't turn off, and wait thirty odd seconds for an accurate read. I'm not saying everyone should race out and buy one, but they do get excellent reviews in brewing and cooking (my review to follow once it's here).
3. BIABacus is the shit, such an excellent helpful tool that will help you to brew great beer from the start (as long as you have a good recipe). It's also a great brewing log with plenty of room to enter key remarks about the brewing day.

anyway, yeast pitched tonight into a brew that already tastes delightful, I can't wait until it's in a keg!

Thanks lads, I need a bigger tub and some old fridge racks for squeezing the bag. I bought myself some silicone gloves for handling the hot bag (and for BBQ activities), they seem great so far... So this weekend I will hunt for a decent pot/tub/bucket/whatever...

Gloves are a godsend, I agree. If you can brew where there is some kind of truss or support overhead, you could set up a simple rope and pulley system. I set mine up for less than the cost of a package of liquid yeast.

I force carbed this on a Sunday, the following Tuesday I 'sampled' the brew which turned into several schooners and we've been drinking this one ever since!! Great brew, nice citrus aroma and flavours, for a single hop the flavour is amazing and the honey malt really leaves a honey taste in the brew that's really noticeable as you finish a glass, similar to bees neez but not as intense, bit more supple. Brilliant beer, I have about 400g more Citra to get through, so next brew might be a double of this delicious IPA.
