50 L vs 45L

Post #1 made 12 years ago
I have a conundrum ...

I purchased a 50L SS pot that also came with a 45L SS pot. I have never attempted a BIAB, only every doing partials on the stove top. I can't see any differences one pots size from the other pots size will cause other then maximum final batch size.

I have a large gas burner and am going to purchase some voile tomorrow to make my bag as per this sites tutorial on that subject.

My 50L pot has some ugly dents in it. I want my brew set up to look as neat and tidy as possible and reflect the amount of time I put into brewing so I think I will use the unscathed 45L pot for my set up. I plan to add a dial thermo, 3 piece SS ball valve and possibly a sight tube at some stage. I also plan to make a wind guard to go around the burner/pot, a stand to sit the pot on above my burner and a click on insulating jacket and cap for the pot.

Doing a few calcs on 'Brewmate' the difference between final volumes in a 50L pot and a 45L pot isn't massive. So I am happy to use the 45L pot for the sake of vanity :champ: . Unless some one has any other points against this???

Hellow BrewMitta,

I got a beautiful pot for Christmas and I love using it.

The beaten pot will turn brewing into a chore and the beer won’t be good. Vanity will expire, and then nothing will work. That’s why Samson lost his strength when his hair was cut off :)

Brewmate should add in a calculation for "how proud are you of your pot" on a 1-5 rating.

So I'm voting for the nice pot.

Remember that a full rolling boil is want you want. Be sure that you have enough room for the boil and the hot break material that will erupt when you add hops or extra DME? I would try the bigger of the two pots if your unsure? The beer tastes the same and sticky burnt on sugar from a boil-over is hell to scrape off a stove top or a garage floor! Don't ask how I know!!!!
tap 1 Raspberry wine
tap 2 Bourbon Barrel Porter
tap 3 Czech Pilsner
tap 4 Triple IPA 11% ABV

Pipeline: Mulled Cider 10% ABV

The final volume difference for a given OG may not be that big of a difference, but did you look into the difference in allowable grain bills? 5L might (or might not) be of importance to you.

The BIABacus has an excellent calculator for estimating how full your kettle will be during the mash for your process (boil time, kettle diameter, etc).

Also check the lid, some of the indent down into the pot causing you to lose a CM or so of depth.I found my cheaper SS pot has a lid that convexes up and hold the full 44qts.

Ummm, yeah. "Pot" in this case refers to kettle. I guess I should have been a bit more concise with my statement considering the crowd here.

I think Ill go the 45. I only have the ability to tempt control 1 25 litre fermentor or 2 2 x 20L jerry cans so the extra 5L isn't going to effect me. If it does I'll pull out the 50L and move the hardware off the 45.

Yay! I was rooting for that one! :champ:

Sorry to the people that lost this time

I'm not saying it's the right practical choice though, as I don't have enough experience to comment on that.

BrewMitta, What will you call it! a kettle or a pot?

I like pot!

I'm drawn towards pot, kettle is a little posh to be using in an Aussie's dialect!

Talking to my wife. I said we're selling up and moving to Australia. It's so bloody cold here. She wants to know what kind of attire the women wear down there in the extreme heat so she can get her wardrobe ready. I guess no long johns, down parkers. I'm wondering too :P

Tea pots here and UK

This world is potty!

What do people drink their beer from? mugs, steins, pint pots, flagons, yards...maybe that's what kettles are for!

(Desperately trying to drag this thread away from thughes request so we don't cause admin any more headaches.) :) PMs welcome though (just to give my wife an idea what to wear)

In all seriousness,

Where I'm from 1 hour South of the Coat Hanger (that famous bridge in Sydney) it gets pretty fresh (cold) in Winter. Not to many Aussies wearing long johns though. To avoid the heat most Aussie sheilas (that's a girl) would probably be chucking on a wife beater (a blue singlet) pair of double pluggers (pair of thongs) and some ruggers (shorts).

Hope that answered your question, I've got to go chase a couple of Kangaroos out of the yard, they're eating my gum trees.

Aussie Aussie Aussie...Oi Oi Oi.

....So that's ok then! Any pictures? maybe you guys with your partners in the sweltering heat.

I thought you Aussies would have no strides on when it got too hot. The first thing we'd do if we go there is strip off completely (watch out!) these balaclavas, scarves, hats, long johns, insulated leggings and boots, and heavy coats are getting so tedious!

MODERATION NOTE

Here's the first, probably only, MODNOTE for 2013 :).

This thread is an ideal opportunity to promote The Nonsense (Chat) Thread. It hasn't been used for nearly a year but this thread shows why it was created before the site became public. Hopefully you guys can make it more prominent.

When you find yourself in a situation where the thread is obviously going off-topic, please post something like, "We better go to The Nonsense (Chat) Thread.

The thread was originally called The Nonsense Thread. I have just added, "chat," to it to hopefully describe it better.

I'm trusting you lot to keep that thread constantly alive.

Here's the second MODNOTE for 2013.

BIABrewer.info is primarily an information site. Whilst the thread creator obviously has a lot of weight, when a thread goes off-topic or becomes totally non-brew-related, we all know that we are not servicing the user who is trying to gain information.

Going off-topic is fun, as is general banter. To retain the fun as well as the integrity of the site, when appropriate, active posters here should direct traffic to The Nonsense (Chat) Thread.

GR, I am hoping you will kick that thread off again .

Nuff said (again :))
