No Chill and Plastic Temperatures.

Post #1 made 13 years ago
Sorry if this has been brought up before but I've had a good look around and couldnt seem to come up with anything so I decided to post on here. What's the deal with adding hot wort (from BK) into a no chill cube or fermenter. Is it safe on the plastics used? I understand they're food grade, but havent seen anything suggesting they can deal with those temps. I just dont want to be leaching stuff into my beer that shouldn't be there and could be potentially harmful. So has any got some knowledge on the topic or maybe know another option? Any input would be appreciated.
cheers

"A linear polymer, High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) is prepared from ethylene by a catalytic process. The absence of branching results in a more closely packed structure with a higher density and somewhat higher chemical resistance than LDPE. HDPE is also somewhat harder and more opaque and it can withstand rather higher temperatures (120° Celsius for short periods, 110° Celsius continuously)."

The only recommendation I can make is that you want to use a container constructed with walls thick enough to support itself when hot (the plastic gets pretty soft at 100 C).

Good Day Brendan, Your Siphon may be made of PET(drinking water bottles), it is very food safe. BUT, It will MELT above 165F/76C. (Don't ask How I Know)

So if you can't wait until the Temperature drops to 140F/50C or less, Don't ruin it!!!

A great alterative is a Stainless steel Siphon and some Silicon rubber hose.

These thins will last forever(or less), are easy to clean, and good to at least 400F!!!

  Todd I've just been trying the syphon out with hot wort as after today I'm seriously thinking to start No-Chilling. Its pi##ing down here now and I've still got to syphon my chilled wort into the FV without drips from the tarp getting into me brew. See here

I've found these on fleabay Here which look good value.
