A few questions from a semi-new brewer.

Post #1 made 14 years ago
I have a decent handle on how the process works and I've made good extract beer, but I still keep coming up with questions. Especially now that I am about to start BIAB.

1. Where can I find a stainless steel measuring stick? My options are lowes, walmart, tractor supply, and some craft and fabric stores. Is there a chance I can just mark the paint stirrer?

2. I see in "The Commentary" that when siphoning to the fermenter that there will be cloudy wort initially and finally that you don't want in the fermenter? This idea is a little murky ;) . My question is where are you siphoning from? The top or the bottom of the wort? And why would the first 200ml be murky then you get clear wort then it goes murky again. Also, how is this circumvented with a spigot on the kettle? I haven't put one on my keggle yet, but I plan to eventually.

3. I have a huge nylon bag that I'm planning to use. It has very very small holes. I bought it here -> http://www.austinhomebrew.com/product_i ... ts_id=1058 The holes are super fine (finer than I would expect from a "course nylon bag") and the stitching is really strong. It also fits very well inside of my keggle. I had planned to use paint strainer bags but they just weren't big enough and this bag is bigger and has finer holes. Should I keep this or should I plan to get a new bag?

4. When I crush my grain should I run it through the mill twice or adjust my mill for a finer setting?

5. The water I'm going to use is fine to drink and it tastes OK, but its not what I would consider "high quality" water. The water that I'm used to drinking is much better IMO but my room mate thinks its awesome water. To me it tastes like it has thickener or something in it. It just tastes different than bottled water. This is the water report -> http://beckleywater.com/Documents/CCRReport.pdf

I think these are all the questions I have for now.
Thanks for the help in advance!

Some of us have marked our mash paddle (2 purposes for a single piece of equipment...bonus!)

I just dump the whole lot into the FV and let the Beer Gods sort it out. After a couple of weeks fermenting and a cold crash everything will settle out and you will be left with clear beer ready for the bottle/keg.

I'd use the bag you have, sounds like it will be fine. There is a bit of correlation between the coarseness of the weave and the grain crush size (see my comment below in regards to this)

Run it through once for now. Record your efficiency into the boil kettle. If you are not happy with your efficiency crush it finer next time. The finer your crush, the better your efficiency will be.....up until the point that the crush is so fine that it hampers the ability of your bag to drain.

General rule of thumb: If the water tastes and smell OK it will make good beer. Brew a few batches before you decide whether you need to fuss with your water.

In summary: Relax, brew something, keep good notes, enjoy the fruits of your labor, and adjust processes as necessary for future brew sessions.
