Friend of mine told me about this site, being the best source of information for biabbrewers according to him, im sure i'll come to agree with him, looking good already :)

Hello Djines,

Welcome to the forum!

I'm sure you have already downloaded the BIABacus file. If not, you really want to do that and use it when planning, conducting and evaluating your brews... It's a great help!

Let us know if you gave any questions, and again welcome to the forum.

Hi everyone. I'm a fairly new brewer - started in December and this weekend will be my first biab and my first non-extract brew. I've ordered a new 15 gallon Megapot 1.2 and I'm planning on doing a blonde or possibly a SMaSH. I want to keep it simple, while brewing something I will enjoy drinking. I've downloaded the trial of BeerSmith and I'm currently reading through the post here. I think I have a decent understanding, but I'm eager to try it and figure this whole thing out. I guess my biggest questions will be starting water volume, how much to stir during the mash, and how to avoid burning the bag if I need to apply heat during the mash. Anyway, nice to meet everyone and thanks for all of the great info.

Welcome temperliano and bryamill. Lots of quality info and advice here on BIAB, you've come to the right place! bryamill, to answer your questions, download the BIABacus and put in your kettle dimensions and recipe, it will give you everything you need. For stirring, start with every 15 mins or so, and to avoid burning the bag, lift it off the bottom of the pot while applying heat. If you have more questions don't hesitate to start a thread and ask away!

Happy brewing fellas!

Goulaigan,

Thanks for the info! I've heard of people putting a stainless steel colander in the bottom of the pot to avoid burning as well. Does that work or is it best to just go ahead and lift the bag? Do you insulate your pot during the mash or just apply heat as possible?

Meant to say - do you just apply heat as necessary?

Bryamill, the colander works, I use a lid slightly smaller than my kettle with a bunch of holes in it upside down on the bottom (cause they sent the wrong lid when I bought my kettle hah) This holds the bag about 1/2 inch above the bottom. I wrap an old comforter around the kettle, usually only lose a degree or 2 over 90 mins. If you have more questions keep them coming, but maybe just start a thread in the new members section called 'preparing for 1st brew' or something like that, just so we don't clog the intro thread up too much here.

Hi (judging from the amount of Aussies on this forum, I should probably say G'day) fellow brewers. I am from Cape Town, South Africa. I am a lawyer by day and a veteran of three brews (one fermenting, one conditioning and one in the fridge), all biab.

Welcome to the best brewing forum on the planet!

@ inus: I think you'll find the place is over-run with Aussies! (....that's what happens when you leave the door open) Have a look around, grab the latest version of the BIABacus, and make some more beer.

@ dhd: Tell us a bit more about yourself, we're a curious (but friendly) bunch here.

1. Where are you from?
Kent, England

2. How did you stumble across the site?
Looking for help converting a 40l Buffalo into a BIAB brewery

3. What you think of it so far?
Really helpful content. Can't wait to get my hands on biabacus!

4. Have you brewed at all before. If so, for how long and what method are you currently using?
A few dozen kits, a couple of failed extract brews and one BIAB kolsch which is in the FV and smelling fantastic

Hoy,

Beer loving Norwegian that stumbled across a link to this forum on a Norwegian home brewer forum. Brewed my first 2 extract in the late 90's, then didn't brew at all until I started brewing all-grain a couple of years ago.
