Hello im from SW Kansas
I stumbled across this site in search of brewing applications for my phone. I first started making brews three almost four years ago with wine. My wife first expressed interest in wine making. I then searched the internet for material. We made a tasty wine. I made a decision that first sip. "This was my last wine". I was hooked. Since then I've logged countless hours trolling forums, watching videos, reading brewing books, learning the history of beer. If it even pertains to ales or lagers in the most minute way I'm interested.
I have around 7 biabs and lots of partial mashes under my belt. Have two kids and a wife we are expecting another in January. So money is very tight now and biab is a cheaper option and the best for 100% wheat ales. I am always looking for ways to produce quality ales with minimum monetary commitments. So that means I farm yeast favoring the 3068 these days. I also malt my own grains wheat ales are what I make now 100% wheat mainly because barley is not grown close to me. Although one pound of barley makes thirty pounds. So probably venture into growing my own grains someday.
This site is great so far lots of info for me to mentally catalog. I am a fire fighter and work only ten to twelve days a month so I enjoy quality time with my family and learning anything and everything about brewing.

Apologies Herne that it took so long for your post to get approved. Very occasionally those who can approve first posts seem to take the same day off or totally miss things :). Anyway, a belated welcome to the forum :peace:.

Above you wrote that your first wine was tasty but you immediately decided it would be your last wine but you were hooked. Couldn't quite work that bit out .

Can't believe you malt your own grain. I make my own bread (once very three weeks) and don't look forward to the time it chews up (how impatient am I? I'd definitely buy it if I could get the same quality) but malting is about 50 times more intensive than bread-making. Yikes!

Good on you ;),

first wine was tasty and I was hooked on brewing process everything pretty much mostly ales though. You know making your own brew wether it's wine or beer. Beers have a huge variety and wines I feel are very limited especially commercially produced wine.
if I don't finish a sentence or am not clear sorry watching kids, juggling 2 great Danes, whilst texting on your forum by android.
Malting grains sssoooooo easy. very minimal investment indeed. trimmed down process is place grain in water~wait~place in dry container with airflow~ wait~stir/rotate/what ever just do gently every morning lunch break and before bed~wait~ once ¿acrospiare? measures same length as grain dry~ wait~ once dry bake in oven I'm telling ya if I can do that while I'm on duty anyone can malt. ask me what I dryed my grean malt in last week some time if you want a good laugh.

Post #4030 made 12 years ago
Thanks for gettting back to me herne :peace:,

You make the malting sound easy. For some reason I thought you had to remove the sprouted acrospire from the grain at some point. My mind was boggling at how to deal with 5 or 10 kilos of malt grain by grain - lol!

And, okay, what did you dry your malt in last week?

Uberbrew from Canada here.
My first home brew was BIAB using instructions for 1 gallon but dividing a 5 gallon grain kit intended for 3V. I will be sticking with BIAB inspite of a few setbacks. I plan to go electric as soon as i vent my brew room.
Heard about this from a post at AussieHome Brewer.

Hello,

I came across this site while researching how to setup my equipment profile for beersmith2. I have been brewing for a little over a year now. I have done extract, partial mash and a few all grain brews. I like the simplicity of just throwing all the grain into a bag and then just using the boiling pot to do it all. I think I will give it a try for my next batch.

Buckeye-tiger, uberbrew, urbanbrewer!

Take a look at our Uber spreadsheet call BIABacus. Search for it and be dazzled! I use beersmith2 now only for inventory!

Hi everyone!

I'm a homebrewer based in Singapore. I've been brewing from extract recipes and decided its time to take the next step up and go to all grain brewing. Singapore, being a small country, does not offer a lot of space in apartments and BIAB seems to be the perfect fit. I really love brewing and seem to spend most of my free time looking at techniques, recipes and equipment. I'm dreaming of when I can get a bigger place and have more space to brew. Of course this depends on whether work allows me to - I'm working in the chemical engineering industry and it involves a hell of a lot of travelling.

To answer the other questions I found this site through Google! I'm quite happy I've found this place and hope that I can contribute!

Welcome Nikuhiru,

I don't know how many brewers we have from Singapore, but you are in good company.

I have been to your country a few years ago, fantastic place.
I don't think you will find any grain in Sim Lim square though!

Thanks for the welcome! There's two Homebrew shops now in Singapore and the beer scene has really taken off recently! Things seem to be picking up here.

Good afternoon-

Found this resource searching Google. I have been brewing all grain for years, and am thinking of upgrading to 10 gallon batches. I came across BIAB and became curious about it- so now begins the learning phase.

My main focus is in streamlining my brewing - less cleaning, less time.

Anyway- looking forward to learning about BIAB.

Cheers!

Michael

mapu,

We are easy to find but your brewing experience with be even easier! It's a shame that BIAB wasn't the first method for brewing beer? It might have prevented a lot of 3 vessel brewers (like I was) from spending a lot of time and money on brewing?

One of the issue concerning me is efficiency- my current method entails a mash in period (in my trusty Home Depot Igloo cooler mash tun), with a batch sparge. How does one achieve the same efficiency? Or is there no difference?

Hi all, I'm in southern Idaho and have been brewing for a few years now, I currently use a 3V system with a rubbermaid cooler as a mashtun, I found this sight while I was looking for AG recipes. I'm very intriged with the BIAG process and will give it a try as soon as I can obtain a bag for my brew kettle. I mainly brew ales but with winter just over the horizon hear in the western US I think I will try some lager beers for early spring. I look forward to learning your ways. I work as a controls engineer for a food manufacturer so I have played with the RIMS and HERMS systems but this is much simpler. Hope to meet you all.

Hi All,

just a quick question to start.

Is there a way to use a gravity chiller with one kettle - by that I mean is there a way to get the flow circulating back on itself without the use of a pump. I did this before on a friends system using a pump and it only took an additional 10 mins to chill the wort down to 20 deg C, which was perfect and means you only need one vessel for the whole process.

Welcome jerryd68 and TurnDevil to BIABrewer.info. BIAB is very popular for a large segment of brewers, I hope you find it to suit your brewing needs. I was a 2V brewer and have found this method of BIAB to suit me, and also combine it with no chill.

Turndevil - I am not sure about a gravity chiller, but you did make me think about something I used to have to cool a computer processor.

Look up "Zalman Reserator", it is a self contained cooler/chiller that could possibly be linked up to a plate/wort chiller?

See attached pic

Hello All! Davy from Long Island NY.
Trolling around on as many brewsites as I can before i start brewing.
BIAB looks like it will fit my needs since space is a premium and I really
like the idea of allgrain.
The weather is cooperating for fermenting so It's time to brew.
I will be starting with a extract just to get my sanitizing and transferring procedures down.
I have picked up some real good tips on timing, and heating.
I like the math involved, should be good fun.
I'm a self proclaimed tinker so all the automated homebuilt breweries are tugging at my soul.
Good thing the wallet has enough sense to keep that on the back burner so to speak.
Thanks for the INput,peace!

Hello all,

I used to do a lot of extract brewing in college, 4 way kegorator and all, that was five years ago. I took a break from brewing for a while. Now Im married and taking my first steps into AG brewing.

Ive cracked my first bottle of all grain AIPA this week, tasted great. I have an Aussie Amber in the fermenter now.

Equipmentwise, Im working with a 50L aluminum pot, reasonably thick, resists scorching. Not easy to plumb with any fittings. Looking at building an easy false bottom. I use an immersion chiller, considering going no-chill, but a bit daunted by the idea of completely reconfiguring my hop bills. I cook on a 3 ring burner, didnt pay attention to where the bag was sitting last time I heated up for mashout and burnt a hole where the bag was draped over the handle. Ah well the hole wasnt in a critical place, recon it still has a lot of good use left.

I bought some canning jars, looking at yeast harvesting. Trying to save money in every way I can.

Thanks for setting up such a nice forum!
