I started homebrewing around 20 years ago, when the only way to drink anything other than lager was to brew your own. I got into AG brewing, spent a bunch of time and money making a three-tier system, and eventually dropped out for a while. With all the microbrews now available, it seemed just too much of a pain to go through all that, and the cleanup, in order to brew my own. Why bother?

Then I heard about BIAB, so I'm back into brewing. If this works out, maybe I'll be here to stay!

Welcome to the Forum Kentmich.

There are a few of us "old Guys" that started like you (1977).

You will find the best way to brew All-Grain is BIAB, Simple, easy to start, and low cost equipment, so there is more money for Grains and Hops.

Look around and when you have questions, just post, some one is here all Day, all Night.

Hi all - Thought I'd stop lurking and make a first post. I'm from Sydney, Australia and predominately brew extract with specialty grains. I'm just about to build my first keezer and move into kegging and thought I may as well make the move into BIAB at the same time. I'm probably about a month or so away from actually doing my first BIAB beer but am just reading up as much as possible beforehand so that I can hit the ground running.

Good Day Muddy Waters, Welcome to the Forum.

Moving to BIAB from Extract w/speciallity grains is easy.

Forget the Extract, use Crushed Pale grains and hold all the grains near 65C for an hour or so.

Of course, you can make BIAB as Complicated as you want, but it really is easy!

Look around and please post any questions you have!

Hello from Leeds, England. I've been brewing for about 7 years now. I started with kits and then and now do extract with speciality grains. I mainly brew darker beers, stouts and porters. I've been looking to move to all grain for sometime but costs, fear and general confusion have held me back. BIAB seems ideal for me as I already have all the equipment needed except a bag. I've been reading about BIAB for a while now and I am now looking at trying a maxi-biab after a bit more research.

Good Day BrewMCroft, Welcome.

You correct, BIAB is the best way to brew All-Grain.

Maxi-BIAB is easy if you have 2 kettles, Look over the Maxi-BIAB topic and see how it is done!

1. Where are you from?
2. How did you stumble across the site?
3. What you think of it so far?
4. Have you brewed at all before. If so, for how long and what method are you currently using?
5. Do you work? Are you retired or maybe you run a household?

Hey there everyone, Optaka here writing from Indiana. I have done a few kit brews before but I want to start branching out into experimenting with different recipes and have a little more control. I live in a tiny apartment so BIaB seems like the best bet for me. Hoping to get some good advice on there so my first BIaB is less painful than my first extract.

Hi everybody! I have been brewing about 13 years using many different methods, but haven't ever tried brew in a bag. It sounds like it could be an easier way to brew and cleanup seems to be much improved over all methods. Just going to try and learn a bit and then give it a try in the next couple of weeks.

Good Day EvSol, Welcome.

Your correct, BIAB is a simple 1-kettle brewing process.

While you look around, check NO-Chill, it helps shorten the Brewday.

Hi everyone. I'm a "relatively" new brewer that lives in the suburbs of Chicago. I have been extract brewing for about a year and a half and am in the process of upgrading my equipment. In doing so, I realized that I have large enough equipment to make BIAB worth while and relatively easy. I stumbled across this site via a simple Google search. I immediately liked the forum and content and signed up. I look forward to learning from and contributing to the site. BEER!

Hi.

Been reading this site for a while but finally got around to writing this :)

I live in Vancouver, Canada and have been brewing for about a year. Progression was:
  1. Kit based IPA, substituting the packet yeast for Wyeast 1332 and dry-hopping with Cascade
  2. Oatmeal Stout - extract + steeped specialty grains (4.5 lb)
  3. Scotch Ale - extract + steeped specialty grains (2.5 lb)
  4. Belgian Wit Bier - extract + specialty grains (3 lb)
  5. Saison - first all-grain (10.5 lb) using a maxiBIAB technique using 2 x 22L insulated pots (one for mash in bag, one for sparge water). Split the boil across these two pots. 52% overall efficiency.
  6. Raspberry Ale - all grain (10 lb) maxiBIAB as above. 72% overall efficiency (mainly due to longer mash, more sparge volume).
  7. Chocolate Oatmeal Stout. Basically an all-grain (11.5 lb) maxiBIAB of #3. Bag was a little too small - efficiency was 63%
  8. Brown Ale. All grain (9 lb) maxiBIAB. 69% efficiency.
  9. Pumpkin Ale. All-grain (11.75 lb) maxiBIAB. 63% efficiency (main problem was forgetting to account for the volume and temp of the pumpkin in the mash).
  10. Christmas Ale. All-grain (11 lb) using a new 32L (insulated) pot with full-volume BIAB. Stove couldn't get this to a boil so we still had to split the boil over 2 pots. Overall efficiency 72%
  11. Ginger Ale. All-grain (7.5 lb) using the above pot (with a bigger, better bag) and full-volume BIAB. Use an electric heatstick to do the boil in the same pot. Efficiency 70%.
