Hello there,
newbie here popping in to say hello for the first time. Have been brewing kits for quite a while and tweaking them, but intrigued now to step it up a level or two. Was gonna try extract, but from what I've heard biab brewing is only a tad more effort than extract with better results, so in for a penny...! Am currently awaiting a new stockpot before diving in as the missus would kill me for damaging hers. Must try and get my head around the calculators too as frankly it looks too complex and scary for words, but I guess it really pays off to understand these, hence joining you good people for hopefully some top tips!

Good day, Vestan Panse, Welcome to the Forum.

BIAB Is a Bit more effort than Extract, and a lot less cost.

An easy way to figure out the Calculators is look over the topic "Use this thread to convert recipes to suit your equipment..." at http://www.biabrewer.info/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=286

Then start your recipe as the topic does and it will help!

Hello I'm new to the BIAB a good friend ...brewbagman ,has told me all about this site and method! I have used the extract kits a lot!! I'm trying to get my head around it all and will be getting a 20L stock pot, and hopefully will make a bag as I'm finding it hard to find any in England brewing shops! Oh and the calculations scare me but I will dive in and give it ago in time for the great British summer x

Hello all

I'm a brewer from Yorkshire, England. Have done a few kits and will be heading towards all grain soon. Have got a 15L stock pot to do an extract brew and was going to use it for mini BIAB but have now acquired a 40L Buffalo electric boiler. I need to replace the tap and add a hop stopper. I still can't decide whether to get a cheap cool box to make a mash tun (am I allowed to say that here?!) or go for BIAB - not sure how to keep the mash warm in the boiler.

Good Day RPT, Welcome to the Forum,

Good to hear you want to leave Extract(Yuck) and Move to All-Grain(Good).

Mash Tun or BIAB???......If you have a lot of room, and like to play with a lot of equipment, And Love to spend time Cleaning, Skip BIAB and definately go 3 vessel!

OR, Look around the site and check out the "Easy" way to Make Great beer, and the MANY ways to keep Mash temperatures +-1C or let it drift +-10C

not sure how to keep the mash warm in the boiler.
RPT - I have the same Buffalo 40L too. I insulated it by using radiator insulation. Others have used camping mats to good effect.
LIDL had rolls of the stuff just a few weeks ago. It is foil backed with a polystyrene outer layer.
I just built it up with the foil facing the heat side so as to reduce any potential for polystyrene meltdown! I have also utilised foil backed bubble wrap as well.

Alright, here goes:

Where am I from, you ask? Well, much to my chagrin, life has put me in southeastern Pennsylvania farm country, for the (indefinite) moment.

How did I stumble across the site? We'll get back to that.

What do I think of it so far? Great community; lots of information; remarkably geographically diverse; crap password restrictions. <=10char? :scratch:

Have I brewed at all before? Yup, my lovely wife & I started last March, and despite life trying its hardest to get in the way, we managed 12 brewdays. By and large our brewing skills improved with each batch, even if the beer didn't. (pumpkin beer is hard!) We did a healthy mix of extract kits & BIAB, since we're using natural gas on a kitchen stove. My plan (and part of why I'm here) is to shift gears a bit and focus on 1/2 batch all-grain BIAB more this year.

Do I work? Am I retired or maybe I run a household? "Life" has turned this out-of-work IT guy into a reluctant stay-at-home dad, much to the annoyance of all affected parties. (Obviously I love my daughter, but damn, three-year-olds can be harder to handle than CFOs/CEOs!)

Okay, how did I get here. Well while my decision to focus more on BIAB was part of it, in truth it was my search for a high-temp siphoning system that led me to the DIY equipment thread, and I wanted to be able to see the pics of the SS autosiphon! (despite it being 3 years old)

So that's about it. And now I've taken up more than enough of everyone’s time, I'm off.
I’m a city-loving but country-dwelling husband, father, and Undiscovered IT Guru stranded in a world of corn, and well, more corn.

Good Day, PHPete, welcome to the Forum.

Many of us, are PRE-Retired, and Now have a brewing Hobby. BIAB is the easist and Lowest Cost Brewing System, there is to date.

Think About MINI-BIAB http://biabrewer.info/viewforum.php?f=23 and do 2.5 gallon batches!

Using "Veggies" to make Beer is different, but, not too difficult. The "veggies" need to be cooked to convert the Hard Starch to gelatinized starch that is easy to converted!

Hello Everybody,

I'm checking in from Rochester, New York, USA where I work in TV production. I've been brewing extract batches here and there for a few years and decided to look into all grain. BIAB seems perfect because I'm an apartment dweller and don't have a ton of space. While researching AG I found this site mentioned numerous times and here I am. I've taken the plunge, so to say, and procured a 42 liter kettle with a steamer basket that I plan to modify with a ball valve for drainage. I'm looking forward to taking my brewing to the next level and I pleased that there is such a great resource here in BIABrewer.info to help me along.

Welcome aboard Gravy :peace:,

Sounds like you are just about ready to go :thumbs:.

No need to wait for the kettle ball-valves if you can get hold of a decent syphon set-up*. I put ball-valves on my kettles and in hindsight, wish I hadn't. You'll find lots of posts here from me moaning about ball-valves :lol:. If you do go for one, make sure it's welded to the kettle so you are not forever trying to fix leaks and also make sure it is very easy to pull apart and clean. Then all will be good.

We'll look forward to hearing how it all goes.

You can make great beer without all the usual equipment, when you use BIAB!

Hello All. Name here is Stew. I came over from HomeBrewTalk.com to visit and learn. I have done 2 AG BIAB so far. One Belgian Wit that tastes great and a best bitter that is still in the primary. I really like BIAB. It has made the conversion from extract to AG much easier for me. I have a 10 gallon SS pot, a wort chiller, two good-sized voile bags, and a couple 6 gallon buckets. I also have a barley crusher on the way. That is most of my stuff. I bottle rather than keg right now.

I may post soon to ask some questions about water volumes. I have been getting mixed advice about volumes and BIAB. Thought I'd come over here and search.
I see that most folks post in metric units here. Is it a problem to post in standard units?

Good to hear you have become a BIABer!

Let us know your volume question, regardless of the Units, there are many of us who know Quarts-Liters-Gallons-Gills-firkins and barrels. For a few.

Let us know if you MINI-BAIB or MAXI-BIAB, and the size of the batch you want to make!

Hi all! I've been brewing about six months now and am getting ready to do my second BIAB brew. The first was Northern Brewer's De Belge kit, which turned out fantastic. The difference between this beer and my extract brews was amazing. For my second BIAB I purchased the Northern Brewer Dead Ringer All-grain kit. I'm hoping that information I find here plus Beersmith will help me do this correctly since I am brewing a kit that wasn't set up specifically for BIAB. Can't wait to see what happens. I love this method of brewing!

Great to know your Already a BIAB'er and those NB kits do make Great beer!

You can download the recipe for ANY of their kits and Save $$$$$ by getting Bulk Grains and Hops and trying your own Recipe changes!

Hi all. Really keen to be active on this site, looks fantastic!

I reside in the northern Brisbane area and am part of a brewing club up this way. Found this site when google'ing BIAB info and joined up straight away after reading a few posts. Really looks great and heaps of good info and advice.
I have been brewing about 3+ years starting with just kits. Got used to temp control and different yeasts. Once trialling and successfully producing those I moved to extract brewing adding own hops and steeping grains. Have loved the experimentation with hops and have made a few half decent beers. I just completed my first BIAB last week and currently fermenting it in the fridge. Decided on a new recipe in an IPA - American style with a huge hop and grain bill. Must say after doing 1 BIAB I am hooked! Cannot wait to try this first brew and kick off the next - a Pilsner - in a few weeks.

Looking forward to seeing what this site has to offer.
