Hi all. I'm a student in the Boston area. I'm new to brewing, but figured I'd jump right in to all-grain. I live in a somewhat space-constrained apartment, and the idea of using BIAB to get the whole process done with one vessel seems mighty appealing. Looking forward to learning from and contributing to the forum.

Hi,

Jamie here- based in Japan

Started extract brewing a few years back as most Japanese beer tastes like piss and imports are crazy expensive.

Just found a contact who can get grains at reasonable wholesale prices over here so about to do my first BIAB batch- am happy to have stumbled over such a wonderful resource! Cant wait to get into all grain brews.

I'm a Brit- so like my malty session beers but recently have got a taste for the more hop-forward american brews so want to experiment with them a bit now.

I'm also looking into buying some software for my mac. Would you guys recommend beertools2 or beer alchemy for a BIAB setup?

Cheers!

Jamie

Hi there Jamie and welcome to the forum :salute:,

All software has inaccuracies, idiosyncrasies etc. I think with Mac, your best bet would be BeerSmith2. It works on Mac and has built in BIAB support using figures etc from BIABrewer.info.

The biggest problem with BeerSmith2 is that it works off efficiency into fermentor which can be a little confusing. There's a guide to Beermith2 for BIABrewers here which will help you out.

:luck:

Good Day Mike, Welcome to the Site. BIAB may be the last step to brew beer, it is an end to itself. It is good to hear you are a home distiller....If the beer is not the way you like it, you can make it whiskey! If you have BIAB Questions let is know, and maybe some of us would like learn to make Whiskey,Bourbon or Scotch!

4) Yes - handful of batches with a Mr. Beer, then upgraded to some 5-gallon scale equipment using malt extracts. Interested in taking the all grain plunge, so I'm doing some homework before I jump in.
5) Yes - by day, I'm a manufacturing manager at a rather large cheese plant. So, I spend my days around more stainless-steel processing equipment than ya'll can fathom. A normal day in my plant can involve a couple million pounds of milk. I try not to spill any, but on the occasions I have, I didn't cry over it. Since it's a cheese plant, I know my way around fermentation processes and the value of good sanitation, too. Every now and then, I threaten to leave and go work down in New Glarus.

Welcome switzead, you can actually get started without any sewing! If your material is big enough just drape it over your kettle and let it settle and hang over the rim.A string or rope may be a god idea to keep it from creeping into the pot. After the mash is done, just bunch up the overhang and pull the bag up.Sort of like a shrimpers net.Nothing complex with BIAB, have fun!

Hi, my name's David and I'm currently living in Charleston, SC USA. I'm a new homebrewer; I'll be brewing my second extract kit (a cream stout) in the next week or so. My first (amber ale) turned out pretty well, if a tad sweet. Nothing to get discouraged over (shorter steeping, bigger boil, better aeration, and fermentation temperature control should help). Since I have very limited space, BIAB is probably the only way I'll be able to move to AG (the 'freshness' and 'purity' of AG brewing really attracts me).

I found this site while reading about BIAB on Home Brew Talk. It seems to be really nice, in spite of me not having access to everything yet. This will be the first place I will come if and when I start BIAB.

I work full-time as an IT consultant for universities, and have a wife and kids.

Good Day David, Welcome to out site, Since you have done a steeping, extract brew, You are almost finished doing BIAB All-Grain. You need a bag, large enough to almost carry the kettle, OR 1 large sheet of VOILE or fine nylon mesh with a diameter of 3.5 times the depth of your kettle. If you ned more Info. or have questions, just post us, and we can help. Good Luck.
