Oh brother,I may have posted this already but I can't find it anywhere so I just assume SNAFU.Anyways here goes again
I have ordered a few AG kits and am preparing for my first AG experience!I plan a dry run today and hopefully brew next weekend(I'm getting dangerously short of my extract kit type of beer). The kits I ordered are all quite similar for wts.
Red Ale
8 lbs Maris Otter Pale
1 lb Munich30L
.5 lb Crystal 70l
.3lb special B 140l(dingemans)?
.75 oz Northern brewer(GR)?
1 oz fuggles
1 pk windsor dry ale yeast
Planning on a 20l batch because the grain bill looks a little low.
I have a 42 liter 15 5/8 dia x 13 3/4 high ss brew pot and propane burner.BTW This pot was advertized on the box as 50l.
I want to dry run my water volumes to temp and check my logistics and brew plan etc.Any advice on this recipe would be appreciated.
A few more questions.
Should I be covering my pot, at all times, never, only when....?
I would prefer to do 23l batches but I think it will be a little tight in the pot,no?
Can I add water to the boil as needed?
Thanks,Lyle

You have 9.8lbs of grain, if efficiency 70% should give around 1.049 SG in 20 litres (1.043 in 23litres). You could always at water at the end if you get a higher efficiency.
A 42 litre pot should be plenty big enough for 23 litre batches, I use a 40 litre one and start with about 33 litres.
I cover the pot whilst heating and during mashing but remove the lid during the boil.
You could add water during the boil, but make sure it is a measured amount so you can calculate your efficency at the end of boil.

Some good advice from Ian.
I agree, your grain bill looks fine. A 40 litre pot is heaps big enough for what you want to achieve.
Never have the lid on your pot during the boil.
