Question about the calculator

Post #1 made 15 years ago
Hi All,

New to the board and glad to be here and have found it!

I have a question about the calculator. I am brewing 23 ltr batch of BlackIPA.

My expected OG is 1.074. The grain bill is 6124grams (13.4pounds). Pot size is 45cms straight sided. 75 minute boil. The water required is as per the calculator is 41 ltrs. This seems very high. Anyone have any thoughts?

Matt

41L for 23L sounds about right. But that is the total water required, there are no more additions
Fermenting: -
Cubed: -
Stirplate: -
On Tap: NS Summer Ale III (WY1272), Landlord III (WY1469), Fighter's 70/- II (WY1272), Roast Porter (WY1028), Cider, Soda
Next: Munich Helles III

5/7/12

I had much the same thought when I started. I assume the 23 litres is what you want to put into your fermenter. If so you will lose water to absorption by the grain, a big lot to evaporation, and there will be more lost to trub in your kettle which you don't want in your fermenter. You'll be surprised how much that all adds up to. Hang in there!
