Hi Everyone! I'm a relatively inexperienced brewer from Maplewood, NJ. Most of my brewing has been with a multi-vessel batch sparge setup, but my wife just got an Anova sous vide thing, and I'm interested in exploring using it for BIAB brewing. I stumbled on this site while doing some research on BIAB.

Looking forward to learning a lot, getting good recipes, etc., as I experiment with BIAB and the Anova.

Hello Cesar. Welcome to the best beer brewing forum on the internet! This site is an incredible resource for brewers. Be sure to spend time studying the Biabacus - it's a very powerful tool. Search this site for some recipes, find one you think you might like and take it out for a spin. Ask questions and you'll get some very informative answers.

If doing a pure BIAB, using a full volume mash, there is no reason to employ continuous wort circulation when occasional stirring of the mash will work. You could do that recirculating activity, but then you'd have to call your process a modified BIAB. You mentioned continuous sparging and in what this forum talks about as BIAB, there is not a distinct step that one calls sparging. One can sparge the hot grains after the bag is pulled from the kettle (using Section W of the BIABacus) but that is also called a modified process.
After the boil, the pump and plate pack cooler used to cool the wort can serve you well and have no bearing on the BIAB term. The other end of the spectrum for cooling is referred to as no-chill.
You might make a great beer doing it the way you described, but it is very different to how I brew. There's room for both approaches on the forum so have at it.
Thank you...still working it out - I have a couple of bags of grain ready (one to make a wheat beer & the other mas gift which is all the ingredients for a brew dog IPA)- I will run the calculator & see what it says, I am just waiting for the final cooler connections to come before first grain brew Day!

Hello. My name is Matt and I live in Cooper City, Florida. I have been homebrewing for about 2 years with 10 gallon coolers and a keggle. I have a keezer with 4 taps. I recently listened to a Beersmith Podcast and heard a presentation on BIAB so I started to do some research and found this site. I am seriously considering purchasing the Colorado Brewing Systems Nano Home system or the Brew-Boss system. I like the idea of reducing by brewing time down from approximately 6 hours. I actually hope to brew a batch this weekend.

Hiya Everyone,

I'm chiming in from the northern beaches of Sydney.
I'm originally German with a while spent in New Zealand(hopefully my Aussie neighbors and future brew friends will forgive the NZ part). with a bit of luck some of my German DNA will allow me to brew decent brews,

Just getting back into a hobby that I have neglected for far too long, Currently I do not have the space or facilities for full batch brews so BIAB will be my new obsession.

In the past I have brewed extract and partial extract beers (as well as fermented various fruits and other fermentables that I have not no way put through a still) and am now looking into getting int all grain brewing.

I am keen to get my first BIAB up and running. My lofty goal for 2017 is to put on at least 10 batches of beer whilst documenting my furrows on my site.(not posting like as it would be rude).

I was browsing some distilling forums and this one came up once or twice so I thought I would check it out and its a lot of help so far.
I work for an IT company to provide enterprise level support. When I am not doing that to finance my random crackpot projects or travel I plan to brew or at least thing or dream about brewing.

Welcome Irish-brewer and Arkique!

Irish-brewer, I am not too familiar with those systems but I am familiar with biab. Once you get your process down you should be able to reduce that time some for sure. Cleaning time can play a big part, with biab in its purest form there is only one vessel to wash...

Arkique, lots of info here to get you started and many helpful brewers from all over the world to answer any questions you may have.

To you both, give the Biabacus a try if you haven't already, and Happy Brewing!

Thanks. Both of the systems are single vessel brewing. This is the one I am leaning towards at this moment, but I have not told my wife yet!!! :o

That's a good looking setup, Not sure how "Nano" I would call it though. :P

Due to the fact that I usually brew 6.5 gallon batches, I am looking to purchase the 15 gallon system. I already had an electrician at my house to give me a quote to have a dedicated outlet in my garage for this system. $300 USD for the addition. I am happy with that.

Hi everyone

I started homebrewing a couple of years ago, mainly because i wasn't happy with commercial beers.
I love experimenting a lot and i rarly follow "official" recipes and other "formal" ways.
It is great to share experiences with others and this forum is very helpfull!

Unfortunately I live in an appartment, so i don't have much free space for equipment, but that's fine.
Also i almost got divorced last time i brewed, my wife says i am too mesy...

Anyway, everyone keep up with the good job doing here!

cheers

Welcome!
I would love to know more about brewing "hard" cider (over here, all cider is alcoholic - what, to you, is plain cider - apple juice???)
Burner is a very important part of your set-up, nothing more frustrating than not being able to reach those mash/boil temps!
Happy reading - there's a wealth of information on this site, and we work hard to try to make it as easy-to-find as possible, but if you get stuck, just ask.
HA! No Apple juice is apple juice! Apple cider is basically non-filtered, non-sweetened apple juice. It is made right from freshly pressed apples, then typically pasteurized in some manner to kill off any wild yeasts and bacteria. The cider I use comes from a local apple orchard and is UV treated, so as 'raw' as you can get. So hard cider is fermented cider here.

I have a new (bigger, better) burner, new wort chiller, and bags, sitting waiting for my first BIAB. I have my 10 gal pot coming this weekend. I either need to wait for the cider to be done or buy a new carboy before I brew again....

Hey Andy,

If you aren't using it, the BIABacus file (Excel based file) is a great thing to use. It's free for use from us on this site. If you record different check points in there, measuring what should be forecast with your brew kettle dimensions, mash and boil time, it will tell you volumes to expect at different points and compare to what you have. Along with gravity measurements... If you start to "go south", something is not right, you can start to pinpoint what it is much easier.

Clear Brewing Technology Link: http://www.biabrewer.info/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=2685

Link to the file, plus a link for Clear Brewing Technology. Very helpful to help understand the BIABacus. Let us know if you have any questions.

Hello, This is my first post.
My fiancee bought me a still for Christmas and well here I am. I studied up as much as possible and just did my first bourbon mash in tonight. I ended up with a 14% abv and slightly high ph of 5.6 in my wort. It only took me 8 hours from start to finish lmao...
I am using a biab for a 10 gallon igloo cooler and I have to say that bag is heavy to lift when full. I need a better system to hoist and hold it up. I am thinking of a deer hoist for the future along with some other equipment to make life easier.
I cant wait to do some AG beer recipes. I know I have to tighten up my process and do some more research and testing before feeling comfortable, but so far its fun. I enjoy the science part of the process.

Hello, Crunch1224 and welcome. Your enthusiasm comes through loud and clear. Take some time to read about things that can help you make good choices and avoid buying stuff that will go unused. A hoist can be a back-saver, while an Igloo cooler is extra cleaning effort to many of us. Be sure to include Clear Brewing Technology in your readings and give the BIABacus  a try and ask questions along the way.
