First Ag this weekend

Hi

I'm going to try my first AG this weekend in my shiny new Burco boiler :thumbs: . To keep things simple I'm going with the NRB's Amarillo pale ale recipe and keeping the volume a bit away from my boilers maximums.
I would appreciate it if someone could give my biabacus file the once over and point out any glaring mistakes I've made. The only real adjustments I made were for my Kettle size and the Aplha Acids of my hops

A quick update on how it went.

Overall everything went pretty smoothly my boiler managed to get a nice rolling boil and I now have a beer happily fermenting away.

My one area of slight concern was around going from the boil into the fermenter.
I don't have an immersion chiller yet so my plan was to transfer the wort after it had chilled slightly to my fermenter and then use a water/ice bath to chill it there.
When I was transferring the wort to the fermenter I noticed that there were still a lot of suspended solids in there that I would have expected to settle to the bottom of my boiler.

I'm not sure if maybe I just didn't wait long enough for them to settle before transferring to the fermenter to chill ? Or is it just a side effect of not chilling in the boiler and getting a cold break?

How did you transfer the wort? If you poured the worth you may have disturbed the solids at the bottom. It is also possible that you could have waited longer for them to settle out. Any way it shouldn't be much of a concern. Whatever solids were transferred probably won't hurt anything. They if anything will add to your fermenter to package losses.

The boiler has a tap so it was transferred using that. I think I was just a but impatient and need to wait longer next time as you suggested.


When I transferred to my bottling bucket the the solids had all settled out nicely and it's looking clear.

Now I just need to wait another few days so I can taste one. If I can wait that long!

Thank you for posting this thread, as I'm soon to be in exactly the same position.

Despite having what I view as a cheap, rough-and-ready, AG brewing solution (Burco 30L, Bag, pre-milled AG kit from MaltMiller), I bought BeerSmith2 to try to help me get everything right.

I find the program confusing, currently - especially in the setting up "equipment" section.

The first recipe I'm going to use will have 5.4kg of grain and 680g of candi/candy (?) sugar. OG is meant to come in at 1065: http://www.themaltmiller.co.uk/index.ph ... ductId=593" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I'd really appreciate someone's answers to these questions:
-> should I aim to use all 27 litres (suggested maximum)?
-> How much water should I "leave out", please, so that I don't overflow? (5.4kg Grain Bill)
If I "fill" to 27L with water, then add grain, I'm surely going to have an overflow.

Welcome to the forum mc85  :salute:  This is your first post. :thumbs:
Download the lastest BIABacus, enter what you know about that kit in question and start a new post of your own.  We will then come along and get you started.  
Hint: There is a special way to enter in candi syrup in Section B (enter "B" for boil only) and then in Section Y use 100% FGDB and 30% Moisture Content to arrive at a 32 ppg.
