First Attempt - Maris Otter Cascade SMASH -BIABacus

Hi everyone,

I have received so much help so far on this forum and i think I've been able to understand the basics of the BIABacus.

This will be my first attempt at a BIAB. I have got a 19L kettle and intend to use my hob/stove to do the brewing. I found a basic SMASH recipe (link in the BIABacus) and I think I've been able to convert the recipe for my 19L kettle. There may be some sections I've missed in the BIABacus, however I'm just looking for the main points to be covered from my first attempt.

My VIB is a little high according to the BIABacus however its still two litres away from my kettle volume so ill take the risk. Also I'm using 2.88ltrs to sparge and the BIABacus is telling me to decrease the amount. Any suggestions as to why?

Kettle Volume - 19.4ltrs
Height - 26.5cm
Diameter - 30.5cm
Basic VIF - 8ltrs
Basic VIP - 7.41ltrs
Beginning Sparge Volume - 2.88 (Which makes my VIF - 9.9ltrs & VIP - 9.17ltrs)

I hope that all makes sense and you can see why I've used the numbers i have in the BIABacus.

What do you guys think of this and any advice?

Kyle, the VIB is a bit High.

The reason is when you add Hops to the Kettle, even with FWH, there is a chance the Sweet Liquor will Foam 1L or 2L

You only have 2.5L of Headspace left in the Kettle.

If you can hold back the 2.88L from the Sparge, and add it into the Boil After the Boil has been running with the FWH, for a while, the Chance of a Boil over will be greatly reduced.

See the attachment for how the Water Added during the Boil, will give you a lot more headspace for the Hop addition.

Ah thanks Josh,

That makes complete sense re the foam up! Can you confirm what the FWH is please I couldn't see it anywhere. And adding the 2.88ltrs during the boil won't compromise the OG or flavour or anything of that sort? I had it in my head, unsure why, that sparging was better?

Other than that though would you say my first BIABacus conversion for my pot is ok?

Kyle, FWH stands for "First Wort Hopping"
This is done when you Pull the Bag to Drain/Sparge, you can add the FWH hops immediately(Preferable in a Hop Sock/Hop Bag, or Hop Spider).

People do this to get a Softer/Less Harsh bitterness, and with Cascade hop a better resin Flavor.

Adding the 2.9L of Sparge 10 minutes into the Boil(after Hop Additions) will end up being mostly Boiled Off over the next 80 minute.
It will not affect the S.G., VAW, or Quality.

Sparging is mostly a waste of time, since you will receive a liquid, that has very much Less S.G. than the Kettle has in it.
BUT, some people believe the small addition of Sweet liquor is worth the effort, and additional Equipment.
It is totally up to you.

The BIABACUS looks good to Go, and I hope Others will see if there is anything Missing.

If you CAN, record the Data needed in Section 'L' and 'M', because if something goes wrong, that data will be very Helpfull.

On looking at that BIABacus for the first time I thought there was never a chance of understanding it. I think I'm ready to go now though! Woopa!

The recipe from BF shows a 36.55 IBU. The BIABacus in Section D should be changed !!! :argh: Please remove 20 L VAW and enter 37 IBU on the second line. Also, very important, change the "First Wort" that is in the minutes field to 60 minutes, at least 60 minutes to 75 minutes, somewhere around there.
