first recipe entered into biabacus. have I done it right?

Hi, I am new here and getting ready to brew our first batch soon. Still getting equipment together and learning as much as I can before I start. I have started using the calculator and am hoping somebody would be kind enough to check the recipe and make sure I have entered everything correctly. I'm still learning how to use the software.

One of the recipes that cough my interest is the galaxy pond pale ale from the beersmith page.

To my untrained eye, appears to have integrity and pretty good reviews.

I have attached the biabacus file.

thanks

Since you are using the word "integrity", I'll assume you already know this thread ... http://www.biabrewer.info/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=2647

But with that said, it looks right for the most part. Section D. (original VAW), however does not look right. That is going to be more in the vicinity of 23L, as you can see the SRM jumps up to 9.8 from where it is (8.0) on the Original Bill side. Also, the IBU's get a bit closer to recipe.

I disagree that it has integrity, because it's quite ambiguous. One has to know a decent amount about beersmith to make some necessary educated guesses. If I found that exact recipe somewhere else, I would not even bother with it.

Thanks for the reply. I have been reading the threads about integrity. To be honest they didn't make any sense a week ago when I looked at them for the first time, now that I've got a week of reading into me they are starting to make a lot more sense. This is definitely a learning experience. :) And I know I have a ways to go.

For now I am more concerned about the biabacus itself, wanted to be sure I was filling it out correctly, and it sounds like I was? The original boil size was not accurate in the original recipe? I had noticed that the srm, ibu and the fg were a bit off from the original recipe. changing the original boil size or VAW did make things a lot closer.

This might be a different topic now, but when looking at recipes of dubious integrity, is changing the vaw to get other values to match a good starting point? Just curious. I'll be using some tried and tested recipes for the first couple batches anyway. figure the all amarilla apa that comes pre populated in biabacus is a good place to start.

Thanks

VAW is a post-boil volume. "Boil size", I assume the brewer in this case means pre-boil volume (or VIB as far as the BIABacus is concerned). I wouldn't worry about these values being different.

Read here for more information. Note the relationship between VFO and VAW is simply the temperature decrease, and resulting shrinkage of volume that occurs with the temperature change.

VAW is certainly a key piece of information. You have to be a bit of a detective, and mess around with some numbers until you feel confident in your guesswork.

As for your file, you did better than most filling it out. Outside of that one error, it looks proper to me.
