1st BIAB NRBs APA vs Pale Ale Kit - taste test

Post #1 made 10 years ago
I recently did my first BIAB (mini-BIAB) and after three weeks in the bottle I put one in the fridge earlier today.
I've been brewing 'enhanced' kits for 12 months and I was really interested to see if I could taste the difference between one of my Pale Ale kits (it's a clone of a well known Australian pale ale called Fat Yak) and my first all-grain brew.
It's fair to say that the BIAB takes a lot longer and is more involved than the kit so if I was going to continue doing BIABs I had to make sure that it was worth it and that the proof was in the tasting.
So, I poured two glasses this evening with a sampler of both of these beers.
Picture of both beers is attached.
The darker one on the left of the kit clone Fat Yak, the one on the right is my first NRBs American Pale Ale (recipe done using the BIABacus on this very site).

My first impression of the NRB was that I liked the colour, the head was good although it didn't last too long, it was not too heavily carbonated which I liked.

Now on the tasting front, I'm a complete novice in this regard with regard to picking flavours such as malt and caramel and so on so part of the reason to write this post it to ask others, from a tasting perspective, how would you describe this NRB APA?

So, I tasted my kit beer first and I'm familiar with it as I've had the odd bottle on and off for the last 6 months, it's a kit so it is what it is.
Then tasting the NRB brew I was really happy to notice that there was a huge difference compared to the kit. The kit beer all of sudden tasted very 'thin' and lacking body and flavour. The NRB brew when I would first take a mouthful I was getting this hit of malt, it was like I was tasting the malty grains, I could really taste it (maybe even too much?), it wasn't sweet or anything and then near the end I was getting the mild bitter/hoppy flavour coming through. It had a nice full bodied feeling in the mouth compared to the watery feel of the kit and it just packed in so much more flavour.

Overall I was very happy with it and really happy to see the effort of the all-grain brew making a massive difference (this is probably obvious to the rest of you but was great to taste it first hand for myself).

I do like these American Pale Ales and after tasting this all-grain one of mine, it'll be hard for me to go back to drinking the kits!

So was hoping for some thoughts on this NRB APA and other people's thoughts as to the taste and flavours you should expect in it and whether my descriptions above roughly seem to match the accepted opinion on this beer.

Thanks

I can't comment on the recipe chesl73, I have never bought Amarillo let alone tried that one (I am presuming here that your recipe is the Amarillo one)!

I did go through a similar experience though. I thought my kit beers were OK, they made drinkable beer, but they were nothing like pro-beers.
I tried All Grain and never looked back. So to possibly help with your question; does your NRB's beer taste like something you would pay for or even get in a pub?

If so, welcome to the obsession!

By the way, I have found grain taste can change between maltsters of the same variety of grain. Including varying recipes with cara/crystal malt additions.
In other words, 2 people can make the same recipe but if you use different grains or maltsters, there is a good chance the beers will be different too (in terms of the grain flavour you refer to).

I've just cracked my 2nd, only been in a bottle 5 or so days so the carbonation is very low also. Missed my OG by heaps and made a few errors on brew day. Definately very nice and almost a thick rich flavour. I'll try another tonight and give more of a description. Mine came out of the fermentor very cloudy and is still that way in the bottle, hoping it might settle out. I would like some more bitterness to be honest and might use more hops in the next batch.

I agree that in my brew the hops didn't come through as much as I'd like in the Amarillo pale ale.

I just did my second BIAB at the weekend, a pale ale from the brewing classic styles book.
Came home from work tonight and it's bubbling away which is always exciting to hear/see.

One daft thing I did, when I ordered the grain bill I needed 90g of wheat malt but I accidentally put in 900g! I realised this on brew day but decided to go ahead with it anyway and see how it turns out. I'm only doing small 9L batches so no big deal. The grain bill was roughly 2 to 1 two row pale ale malt to wheat malt so might end up with some pale ale wheat beer!
It won't be winning any prizes but I'm sure it'll be tasty!

I have my in laws over at the moment for Xmas and I pulled out a bottle of this Amarillo APA that I did back in Sept as part of this original post. I haven't tasted it in months. I poured a glass for a few people and myself and the beer was fantastic. Some of the initial harsher elements had really mellowed and it was smooth with a great colour and was great to drink.
It was the first all grain brew of mine I've given them to try, I suspect they were expecting to drink some average kit brew. They were taken aback by how good it was. Even my mother in law liked it and she never drinks beer!

Will have to revisit this recipe soon I think.

Yep did that myself recently typo on my grain order to LHBS resulted in 600g of black malt instead of 60g so ended up with an Extra Extra Black IPA.
Nice post by the way
