Google search looking for pointers for first brew.

3. What you think of it so far?

Seems like it will be an excellent resource for me going forward!

4. Have you brewed at all before. If so, for how long and what method are you currently using?

First brew day is this weekend

I do work, I do not run a household. So no SWMBO to limit my spending :D

Hi All!

Fairly new to brewing. got a couple of extract brews under my belt now getting going on BIAB! First project was converting an old freezer inter a ferm chamber with an stc-1000 and a hair dryer. then a copper immersion chiller. Have just finished building myself an electric boiler (70L stainless) and now i'm ready to go! (next projects - BIAB bag and a stir plate for starters. then later down the road a keezer set-up)

To answer the questions:
1. Where are you from?
UK. Hampshire.
2. How did you stumble across the site?
Podcasts i think. Beersmith podcast perhaps.
3. What you think of it so far?
Looks greet. massive resource base for questions and ideas!
4. Have you brewed at all before. If so, for how long and what method are you currently using?
As said, a couple of brews down now (extract and extract with grain). Getting on the electric boiler route to get into BIAB. Got ferm temps under some control (but only enough space for 1 bucket at a time)... need to expand.
5. Do you work? Are you retired or maybe you run a household?
Work - Software sales. Lots of time away from home and hours in the car... I managed to listen to the entire (99 episode) back- catalogue of Beersmith podcast in 2 month behind the wheel.

Anyway, nice to meet you all. I'll be asking questions that i can;t find answers to in the forums - so in advance, many thanks

All the best
Jamie

Hey peeps
Posting from Ireland here, found the site while researching homebrew stuff before I started buying/collecting equipment. Have settled on BIAB as I live the simplicity of it, so here to find out all I can

Take it from someone who has avoided the metric system like the plague (I'm a typical American): Embrace it and learn to "brew metric", it'll make things soooo much easier here in the forum when trading recipes and asking questions.

NewBiabD00d,

If you have downloaded BIABACUS, in Section 'U' there is an "Inches to Gallons", as well as "CM to Liter".
Once you have established your Kettle Dimensions.

Also, in section 'V' the Head space calculator gives you the Volume Of liquid in the Kettle from the Top Measurement.

Are you opening the document with Excel? I looked in Column U and didn't see anything. I even did a Control + F "gallon" and it yielded no results

It is Section 'U' titled "U.Height = Volume", Located under the Large "Great Beer...It's in the Bag!"

I do not use Micro-Shaft Excel, I am a LibreOffice Version:4.2.8.2 User.

Joshua is talking about Section U, not column. If you look a little closer at biabacus you will see each section heading (in green) has a letter and they go sort of in order.

This section (U) however does not convert inches to centimeters, it simply shows you how many gallons of liquid your kettle contains based on the depth of liquid measured in inches. There is no way to enter things in inches and gallons, but there is a second sheet at the bottom called unit conversion which will help you convert everything to metric...

And just so the mods don't get cranky, if you have further questions perhaps start a thread wherever you think relevant and we will be happy to answer them for you, just so we don't clog the intro thread up too much here...

Happy Brewing!! (and converting) :salute: :peace:

Hello,
my name is Slav, I'm from Thunder Bay, On (born in Poland). Brewing now for over 6 years. My first brew was from Mr. Beer kit I got from my daughter, then quickly switched to 5 gallon batches using extracts first, then extracts with grains. I'm planning to brew old Polish beer Grodziskie (or Gratzer), so I started to look for a better brewing method. I'm not interested in all grain, but BIAB seems to be exactly what I need. I found this page on canadianhomebrewers forum. I really like it from the first moment, hoping to learn as much as possible. First I definitely will need to dig through all the topics and forums and I am very excited to do that.

Hey Slav, welcome aboard! I'm a few hours south of you, just north of the Sault! Think you might be the closest member geographically to me I have seen here... I'm over on CHB as well and tend to recommend this site quite a bit over there. Your statement about not being interested in all-grain but BIAB being what you need is a bit contradictory since BIAB is all-grain, however I'm guessing you are referring to multi-vessel style all-grain. BIAB produces as high a quality or superior beer to most multi-vessel setups using the same recipes / ingredients.

There is definitely tons of info here, so dig away, and if you can't find something just ask, lots of helpful folks here. Also grab yourself the BIABacus, and get to know the terminology used around here, both can be found in previous posts in this thread from Joshua. And , finally, Happy Brewing from a fellow Northern Ontarian!!!

Thank you goulaigan,
you're right, this is what I meant, seams to me biab is just simpler :-) Just a pot and a bag instead of the whole multi-vesell setup. Right now I'm just digging through the posts looking for useful staff, omg, there is a lot to choose from :-) and the first experiment is planned for Saturday if the weather cooperates. There is finally a chance for spring at this end of Lake Superior. Looks good so far :-)

Around here spring is doing its usual bait and switch, been snowing the last 2 days after a bit of a thaw... Waiting patiently for the maple sap to start running so I can make some more maple beer, and syrup. Good luck on your brew Saturday! Even if the weather is crap, I brew all winter outdoors, as long as it isn't too cold for the propane burner to work! Be sure to let us know how your first go turns out!

G'day, I'm from Melbourne, i've been searching on line for BIAB and found this site. Site looks pretty cool, lots of great info. Done +30 extracts, and looking to get into all grain, but stepping up with BIAB 1st. Work in an office all day, so any chance to brew or learn about brewin is great ! Cheers

Hi there!

I'm Robert from Sweden.
I've always appreciated beer and just recently decided i want to brew. Going straight from no brews to all grain and BIAB looks like a good and simple way to do it. I've just bought my pot (25 l) and looking forward to put in my specifications into the BIABacus. I'm going to go for the NRB's All Amarillo American Pale Ale as a first brew (and later on looking forward to a hefeweizen and after that probably an IPA fermented with champagne yeast)

Found the site while doing research and studying brewing, both the technical and theoretical aspects of it. Yes I'm a physician and loves to understand stuff so I've definitely spent countless of hours reading blogs, forums and the whole 'how to brew' by Palmer already.

Cheers!

G'day sling and ribbe, welcome aboard. I agree with JackRussel it is pretty easy and forgiving ... as a beginner to BIAB the first mistake i made was boiling with the lid on, even my mate (brewing mentor) made the same mistake, even still the brews turned out OK just a bit weak. Enjoy, have fun, jump in!

Greetings from SRQ, FL ...

I'm an ex-surgical nurse, current full-time (and then some) cad/cam engineer who enjoys webdev, photography/photogrammetry, growing hot peppers, electronic music, and cooking (leans a bit towards Modernist Cuisine) ...

I don't even like beer, in general, really. I like some instances of beer, and I'm curious to figure out what differentiates them from others, and to try to riff on them ...

I haven't brewed yet, but I have accumulated some gear for other purposes that already has me half-way there ... more on this, soon? ...

Cheers!
