OBK Kettle (ontario beer kegs)

Post #1 made 11 years ago
Hey All,

Newb here...
I am ready to pull the trigger on my last piece of equipment for BIAB... the kettle... the main investment.
Currently scoping out 2 different kettles from OBK (hope lots of you are familiar).

Anyway, they offer a 10gal "Heavy Duty" with thermometer and 3pc ball valve for $205, but then they offer a 16gal with same hardware for $160.
I am only planning on running 5gal batches, as i already invested in standard size primary and secondary ferm's. I have a 66000btu burner, i am not too worried about getting either size to a boil.

Looking for some advise on whether i should get a thicker higher quality (but smaller) kettle, or go up to a 16gal and have the comfort of easy boils?
I plan to mash indoors on my gas cooktop to have greater control than outdoors with wind and clumsy propane regulators etc... after mash, i will mosey outside and boil with propane.

I am leaning towards the 10gal to keep things in proportion. I feel the 16 might be a bit too large to mash in, and overkill for boiling down to 6gals...
but... the price...?
Help is appreciated!

Hey Floaton,

Love Patrick and the gang at OBK. Get all my ingredients from them as I do not have a source close to me and they always come out cheapest with shipping...

I think you may find you are pretty close to the top on Big beers with the 10 gal. I do 23 litre batches in a 15ish gallon aluminum stockpot.(60 litre) My total water needed is usually around 10 gallons or more for bigger (7%) beers. The pot cost me $70 on amazon. It has no thermometer probe to poke holes in the bag and no ball valve to collect gunk and require dissassembly and regular cleaning. I syphon wort to my fermentor allowing complete control over how much trub gets transferred...

Have you tried throwing a recipe in the BIABacus? It will tell you how much water you need for the required volume you want into fermentor, and will also estimate mash volume. You will need to get the dimensions of the kettles tho to do this, (or guess)

If it were me, I would go for a 15 or 16...

You can't go wrong with OBK. I have the 15 gal version of the same pot. I don't have the thermometer. The hole is there for it but I have it capped. I am very happy with it.
The 15 gal is a terrific size as goulagain has said. With the 10 gal pot you could only brew upto 5 gal batches. I haven't tried yet but I imagine that I could pull off 10gal batches in the 15 gal kettle if I decided to.
Go for the 16gal you won't be disappointed.
Some people are like slinkies. Not good for much, but bring a smile to your face when pushed down the stairs.
