BIABacus question. Strike water more than total water?

Post #1 made 11 years ago
Hi all,
first brew day is nearly here :argh: . Im doing a test run on my 5500w eBIAB right now.

I plan on doing NRB's APA just to keep it simple. I have been messing around with Beersmith 2 and Brewing Classic Style as well the BIABicus and also trying to mach up ingredients from my LHBS website. The file attached is a recipe that I came up with that I was going to brew first and used the water numbers for my test.

But I noticed that the strike water volume is different to the total water volume. I guess I have made a mistake somewhere, if not which one should I use?

Cheers.

What's happening here nosco is the BIABacus is telling you that if you put 38.13 L of tap water into your kettle and heat it to mash temperature, that tap water will swell to 38.88 L.

So, nothing to worry about mate. Water/wort swells (and shrinks) as the temperature rises (or decreases).

From ambient (tap ) temperature, it swells by about 2% to mash temperature and then by about another 2% to boiling temperature. After the end of the boil (flame-out) your wort shrinks by about 4% when it reaches ambient temperature.
If you have found the above or anything else of value on BIABrewer.info, consider supporting us by getting some BIPs!

Your question is perfectly reasonable nosco and not dumb at all. One thing we will be looking for soon though is that if your question is answered on the forum, you edit your initial post and put a tick beside it. This indicates the question is resolved. This means that new members know that reading it will give them an answer and that there is no need for old members to read/keep reading it.

Hopefully there are enough details in this old important notice.

If the old post gives enough detail then please tick this thread. If not, let us know.

Cheers,
Nuff

Nuff,

May I jump in here to ask, where you (the postee) puts the tick?

Is it in the Subject or will there be a tick box somewhere, or should I simply shut up and wait to be told :)
