Excel With Numbers (Mac)?

Post #1 made 11 years ago
I have an Apple MAC. It uses their spreadsheet software called Numbers. Does anyone else use this? When I copy a recipe to my desktop, I get the message that some of the .xls formulas are not supported by Numbers. Hoping someone can supply a bit of help.

I've been away from BIAB for a long time  and still have a lot to learn. That said, the first recipe I put in worked great as far as my input numbers were concerned. I'll call that my APA #1. However, I tried to copy the sheet to my desktop and renamed it to my APA #2. When I tried to modify the spreadsheet as far as pot dimensions were concerned.. they stayed as original. I don't think there is a way to put Excel on my computer.

If there is no solution to my .xls vs Numbers.. and still being green with the BIAB spreadsheet, Is there a place on this forum site where I can do modifications.. kind of like a "Bill's Space" :) and play with it there so it doesn't confuse anyone else?

Thanks Owners/Mods/users for any help.

OpenOffice as suggested is great. One thing I was just thinking that May also work (and I havent tried it -yet)

Google docs.

It's free, handles spreadsheets and you can use it In any web browser. Certainly worth a try.

Might even try it myself as would be handy to have Biabicus portable on an ipad whilst I am brewing.

Hmmm I like that idea. :-)

Unfortunately, Google Docs cannot handle the many hidden layers of the BIABacus.

Thanks all.. ready to get back into BIAB.. both the forum and the process.

I got a few too many extract kits as gifts. Plus, being in a number of club group brews.. I didn't have to do much brewing for a L O N G time :)

OK.. this just goes to show you.. I already have Open Office on my MAC. I'm a total dead head with spreadsheets though. So, hope someone will bear with me.

When I COPY the BIABrewer that I did on the forum a year ago.. onto my computer.. It copies on my MAC in MAC's native spreadsheet application.. Numbers... even if I have Open Office open.

I can open O.O and create a document/spreadsheet.. but, I don't see a way to import the .xls file from my desktop into O.O..

What I have tried.. Opened OO. then clicked on OPEN. That showed my BIAB file on my desktop. When I click on this Numbers file on my desktop.. nothing happens. When I copy the BIAB file from the BIABrewer site to my computer it automatically imports it as a Numbers file.

I'll continue to play with my BIABacus file.. but, hoping someone can fill in my brain void. I can brew.. but I'm deficient on tech.

Sounds like a couple of you folks use O.O. successfully.

Thanks Hints.. I think I was able to open the file in O.O. However, as with Numbers, if I try to make a change in either the pot dimensions or an ingredient, the results remain the same. Time to throw up my hands and say I give up :)

Get rid of any existing BIABacus files you have opened with Numbers. Download a fresh BIABacus file from the site. That should work.

OK FOLKS.. put this in your databanks for future reference in case there are other Apple fans who need this help.

Put the OpenOffice icon into the Dock on the iMac. Then drag any .xls file into that icon.. and BAM!!!! It not only opens.. but I can now make changes :D :D :D
