33 litre grain bag in 50 litre pot

Post #1 made 11 years ago
Hi fellow brewers. This is my first post other than the introduce yourself post.

I'm looking forward to reading more info on this what looks to be a very good site. thx to everyone for the biab info so far.

I'm planning a batch this weekend and have invested in a 50ltr stock pot. My first attemp at biab was in a 18litre pot, which ended up being a partial mash. Obviously I needed a lager pot! I think I've done the right thing in going for the 50 as I want to do full boil volumes. I bought a richies mash/sparge bag, before buying the pot, but it doesn't line my new pot. The grain sack/ bag is 33lts in volume but at full stretch it won't line the side of the pot.

My question is is will this effect mash efficiency because the grain isn't in all the water, as its going to be sitting closed like a tea bag.

Thanks

While I'm here- I'm having trouble running the excel biabacus on my mac. It opens but is extremely slow to work with. it's as if I've opened a massively complicated file on an inadequate computer. The spread sheets arn't that data heavy. I'm on a macbookpro with 8gb ram and have microsoft excel 2011, so should be fine. Its unusable, anyone else had this? I really want to use it as it looks great. Do I need a pc?

Just thought i'd give an update on anyone using a mac and struggling with the biabacus using excel. i.e. it being really sluggish

I downloaded open office (it's free) and the spread sheet works really well on that. Give that a go.

Hope that helps someone.

Its hard to say whether it will make a definitive difference or not.
My suspicion is that it will. I don't know if there is any data to support it but it is recommended that your pot fits inside the bag.

Welcome to the forum Andy and thanks for the heads up on the Mac problem and the fix. There are quite a lot of hidden calculations in the BIABacus and many of these go right up to the maximum of what a spreadsheet will handle. Shame Mac Excel doesn't work too well but nice to hear that OpenOffice works well. Hopefully LibreOffice will do so as well.

As for the bag size, the reason why it is recommended that it should line the kettle was that in the very early days, we found a few people getting poor kettle efficiency and, once everything else was eliminated, they always seemed to have a smaller bag. I think though that if you regularly stirred the mash, that this wouldn't be a problem. So, to be on the safe side, maybe give the mash a stir every 10 minutes or so. If you did this, I find it hard to see there being any problem apart from the inconvenience.

Hi Andy,

Glad you found a work around, but I am a little confused. I used BIABacus on a Mac quite a lot and have not found any real difference (speed wise). I have Office 2010 installed on both machines and run Mountain Lion on the Mac.

I do have a reasonably fast Mac with maximum ram and SSD drive, maybe that is the difference.

Still, I am glad you have a work around, BIABacus is well worth the effort. It truly is a great tool
