Hello all.

My name is Ozzy and I reside in Washington State. I am a newish brewer with 6 extract and 4 BIAB brews thus far. I have joined this site as my BIAB has been inconsistent, with my efficiency dropping lower with each brew. I am hoping to learn some new information as to how I can achieve a consistent 70% eff. Thanks for your time!

Hi everyone,

I'm from Wellington, NZ. I've been brewing extract/partial mash for about a year and looking to start BIAB-ing. Cam across this site while googling info on how to get set up. Looking forward to gaining some good knowledge from the forum, and hopefully sharing some knowledge in return when I can.

Welcome aboard Ozzy and Craigy :salute:

Ozzy, you have come to the right place to learn what efficiency is really all about. Here are two quick things for you. There are two major two types of efficiency, kettle efficiency and fermentor efficiency so the first thing (which no one does on other forums) is to state which efficiency you have measured. Kettle efficiency is the most useful number to work with but a lot of software asks you to work off fermentor efficiency which muddies the waters a lot.

The second thing is that kettle efficiency (and fermentor efficiency) should not be constant although you would have been lead to believe that they are. A low gravity beer is actually more efficient than a high gravity beer. So if the first brew you did was a 1.050, the second a 1.055, the third a 1.060 and the fourth a 1.065 gravity brew then you should notice your 'efficiency' dropping over those brews.

Anyway, to make all this stuff easy to master, we developed the BIABacus which estimates things like evaporation rates and efficiencies for you. Take your time to have a look at it. Don't be scared off at a first glance as it is a lot easier than it initially looks.

Craigy, we are sending some hot weather your way ,

Bonjour All,

Reasonably newbie brewer here, from Guildford, Surrey.

Been doing kit for a while and now just about ready to step up to the plate for all grain and decided BIAB was the one for me.

The whole site looks fantastic by the way, really looking forward to being a part of this.

Brewer, lucky you!

This site aims to please! We left you that username because we knew that you would find us and join the fight against other forms of brewing. (that's all I could come up with?) Anyway, Welcome.

Hello all. Finally time to do the first post thing to get the BIAB ball rolling along rather than lurk in the background. Been an off and on again extract brewer for several years and decided to take things up a notch to see if I can make some better brews. I've generally liked my brews but my extract batches just seemed to be missing something and I'm hoping this will give me what I'm looking for.
Did my first batch over the weekend and will post a writeup after the first posting.

Cheers,
M

schlitz,

"The beer that made Milwaukee famous." Welcome. BIAB brews can make Schlitz, Blatz, Miller all taste like water. Come to think of it. They do taste like water! I am from Milwaukee, so I should know! Welcome!

Hey everyone.
Just a post to say hello.
I have made wine on and off for over twenty years and some concentrated wort beer kits years ago and thought I would try my hand at all grains.
BIAB seems like a great place to start. I have my grains and equipment ready so all I need is a free day to get to it.
This looks like a great site and I am looking forward to future conversations and meeting some fellow brewers. :-)
Cheers!

Hi all,

Been brewing for about three years, but only moved to all grain (BIAB) brewing about 6 months ago. The AHB forum has been of great assistance for me up 'til now (and will probably continue to be), but seen this site referenced on there and hope this might be a bit more specific to my brewing at present. I'm from a small town called Manildra, in central west NSW.

Cheers,
mosto

Welcome Dee Envy and mosto. Sorry about the long wait for your post approval. Sometimes this happens especially around Christmas and New Year.

You've come to the right place for BIAB advice. The same brewers who pioneered BIAB, initially on AHB, are the same ones who started this forum and still answer questions here.

Have fun with your brews .

Hello to everyone!

I've been brewing BIAB for the last year. I registered hear last year but finally got around to my first post here. Enough lurking I figured.
If you're in the Chicago area give me a shout!

Evening all. I have been reading all the good stuff on here as I have decided to take the step to AG brewing after 6 kit brews. I am looking forwards to making a start in ghe new year. Thanks for all the great information...

Hello

I'm Pete from British Columbia Canada. I've done a bit of extract brewing but am hoping to do my first BIAB in the next week or so.
I've got a 34L aluminum kettle (propane fired), 50L plastic primary fermentor and several glass 1 gallon secondaries.

I've got my first recipe chosen and have run it through the calculator. I've run across something that doesn't make sense to me but I'll post it in the appropriate thread.

Look forward to some good brews

G'day all. The name's Fergus. From Ireland but living in Canada these last few years. I typically brew AG but I needed to find something that allows me to keep brewing during the bloody cold winters here (brewed outdoors last week at -24C). BIAB seems like the perfect solution so am researching as much info as possible getting the first BIAB brew under my belt (tomorrow hopefully). Looking forward to learning a lot from everybody on here.

Cheers,

Ferg

Welcome fergus to the best BIAB info site on the planet. Feel free to ask any questions you might have. My question to you is, what part of Canada are you in? My guess is Alberta or Manitoba if you are brewing in -24 weather. :salute:

Hi everybody!

This is Niklas from Stockholm, Sweden. I started with brewing about 3 months ago, was it?. I have made 6 brews so far. 4 of them american ale style, 1 IPA and 1 brown ale. I think all of these beers turned out lovely though I have not tasted the last one yet, a smash, using pilsner malt and cascade. My main inspiration have been the book called "Brygg öl" written by Henok Fentie & Karl Grandin. These guys are the phantom brewery called Omnipollo. Kudos. The book first taught me the method of sparging but my first brew was made using BIAB. Big thanks to my girlfriend who knows how to operate a sewing machine.

Brewing is fun! I have spent hours and hours reading but I still got so much to figure out and understand.. Today Im going to brew a porter!

Welcome arulord. It's great that you have a girlfriend that sews, many of us here have had to learn that skill ourselves. Perhaps you can trade her brewing lessons for sewing lessons? The couple that brews together stays together!
