Hi everyone! I'm so glad I found this forum.

I did my first mini-BIAB partial mash just the other day. Managed a full 1.105 OG for an Imperial Stout. Volume Into Fermenter was just under 2.9 US gal, though. I'm hitting up these pages for tips on how to maximize batch sizes from my 6 US gal boil kettle. I want to get the most out of my gear without buying bigger!

Thanks for hosting this and for all the great guides and information!

Welcome gr090401 and argentcorvid,

gr090401, (TONS of mistakes) are expected but the beer usually comes out drinkable anyway. It's a gift of nature so we accept the results with gusto! You will brew perfect beer soon!

argentcorvid, R&D "Engineering Assistant"!!! Don't go crazy trying to add automation to BIAB. We all want to do it but in reality KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) is best for BIAB. Your going to have fun here and with BIABacus for software you can feed your need for control.

Hi there,

I'm in Brisbane. Been brewing kits and partial steep type brews for a long time, with some full grain batches using some creative methods when I had a commercial kitchen. I'd been scheming about moving over to a proper multi stage brewing set up for some time, then Ross at Bacchus put me onto the BIAB idea. I was lucky enough to get the necessary equipment as a birthday gift! So I found my way here whilst searching for BIAB pointers. Site is a wealth of info. I'll be brewing my first batch as soon as possible! I'm looking toward a very traditional ESB.

Cheers!

Hi, JP here in Sydney. I have been brewing kits and adding bits and pieces to them for a couple of years with "Not terrible!" to "Meh..." results, but a couple of months ago I decided that I wanted to be more responsible for the actual flavour of the beer I was brewing and started finding out how to go about all grain brewing.

I realised that this could quickly become very expensive and time consuming, and somehwere along my steep learning curve I read about the concept of BIAB and found this site on the first page of a Google search for "brew in a bag".

The amount of information that has been collected here is great for a beginner to learn without being intimidating. Thank you to everyone who put in the effort!

My first BIAB experience was also my first All-Grain experience, and also my first SMASH experience - Three birds with one brew! The brew was a Pale Ale Malt with Galaxy Hops, mashed in a 48 litre hot water urn for 60 minutes and then boiled for 60 minutes with hops additions at 30 minutes and 5 minutes from the end.

I then fermented for 3 weeks in primary, and bottled with a hoped-for CO2 volume of 2.7 and am now a week into bottle conditioning. I have learned from my previous kit-related experiences that I should wait for about three to four weeks before drinking anything so have not yet been able to taste the fruit of my BIAB labour.

I have low expectations though as I am not usually lucky enough to get things right the first time round.

I'll update the post again in a month or so to let you all know if what I made is drinkable.

If you've made it this far, I thank you for your perseverance!

Regards
JP

Glad to be here!

Just got an electric BIAB system and wanted to get this best information out there on BIAB. People who never used this system don't know much about it. This site is great!

From Mooresville NC and have been brewing for a year using extract and wanted to get into all-grain but was limited in space and time and this seemed to be the best way to go and so far I did two batches already but might have messed up because I did not see this site before I did them?!? We will See!

Welcome Hippityhops; You should hopefully find all you need here. If not just ask!

Also have a look at the BIABacus spreadsheet, takes a lot of stress out of brew day.

Hi everyone,

I'm a new brewer in Austin, TX. What began with a humble Mr. Beer kit is now an addiction enabled by living a few miles away from a really nice home-brew supply store. Moving from extract+grain to BIAB in the hopes that it's a more accessible all-grain... I'm neither sufficiently talented nor independently wealthy enough at the moment to do three-stage AG brewing.

Enough about me, let's talk beer!

Welcome tacotuesday; join the club, we are all addicts here!

Don't worry about talent or wealth, Whether you had these or not, BIAB is the way to go!

Hi, my name's Eric and I live in the US/New Jersey. Been homebrewing extract just since June and think that small-batch BIAB may be the best thing for me. To be involved in the entire brewing process and do it on the stovetop.

Also trying to talk my wife, who has a pretty green thumb, into growing our own hops. Growing our own grain's probably not very practical, though, but I do like the idea of a fully "self-contained" system.

I look forward to doing more on this site!

Eric

mozart123,

Welcome to the addiction. Brewing with BIAB and growing your own hops is easy and works well in your area. Growing grain is a lost cause because it's a pain and not worth the malting problems. You will be happy or might be ecstatic with brewing all grain with BIAB. Welcome again!

I will be doing my first BIAB next weekend (second brew ever) so I have been reading up on the process and found this site from Homebrewingtalk. I actually came here because I had a question on grain to water ratios.

Thanks

Hello!

I'm London-based brewer, doing electric BIAB in a smallish 1 bedroom flat. Keeping everything as compact as possible is quite an interesting challenge, but I have working setup where everything fits behind the living room door and down the side of the sofa

I confess I mostly reside on a different homebrew forum as it's more UK-focused, but I spent a lot of time reading guides etc. on here when I was setting up - thanks! The BIABacus is particularly spectacular.

Here is my ratio question:

I am planning on doing my first BIAB (no sparge) next weekend. So I checked out the simplebiabcalculator and the grain to water ratio seems too high (2.92 qt/lb). I got the impression most no sparge BIAB where done at 2.5 qt/lb so did I make a mistake with the calculator or am I not understanding something?

Calculation
Ingredient Amounts
Grain - 10.75 lb
Hops - .75 oz

Boil Info
Duration - 60 min
Boil off - 1 gal/hr

Volumes
Finished Beer - 5 gal
Fermentation Trub - .5 gal

Misc
Kettle Diameter - 15.75 in
Mash Temp - 152 f
No Mashout
Grain Temp - 60f

Result
mash water - 7.87 gal
mashout water - 0 gal
strike temp - 158.28F
pre-boil - 6.53 gal
post-boil - 5.53 gal
transferred - 5.5 gal

Recipe
Deception Cream Stout
Recipe Type: All Grain
Yeast: Wyeast 1450-PC - Denny's Favorite 50
Yeast Starter: Yes - 1 Liter
Batch Size (Gallons): 5
Original Gravity: 1.058
Final Gravity: 1.020
IBU: 27
Boiling Time (Minutes): 60
Color: 36
Primary Fermentation (# of Days & Temp): 30 Days @ 67 F
Tasting Notes: Silky chocolate and coffee backed by smooth caramel.

All-Grain (assuming 75% efficiency):

6.5 or 7 lb Pale Malt (2 Row) US (2.0 SRM)
1.5 lb White Wheat Malt (2.4 SRM)
1.00 lb Caramel/Crystal Malt 60L
0.75 lb Chocolate Malt (350.0 SRM)
0.50 lb Roasted Barley (300.0 SRM)
0.50 lb Lactose (Boil 10 min)

0.75 oz German Magnum [13.40 %] (60 min) - 27.0 IBU

1.00 Whirlfloc Tablet (Boil 10 min)
1.00 tsp Yeast Nutrient (Boil 5 min)

Mash 60 min @ 152

Ferment 1 month @ 67 degrees F

Hi all,

I'm currently hailing from the mighty midwest city of Indianapolis/US. I've done a couple of extract brews and ciders now in 5 gallon versions. I'm currently doing research for a 2 to 2.5 gallon BIAB setup with a heatstick to start, and possibly moving to a more serious BIAB setup with pump and PID. I'm also looking at 1 gal BIAB recipes/information also. Cheers to learning new techniques.

Greetings from Dallas, Texas, USA.

I have been partial mash brewing for 2 years and am ready to move on. I love the simplicity of the BIAB method so have been researching and am very glad I ran across this site. Unfortunately, my job and 2 kids keep me very busy so I don't get to brew as often as I want but am hoping to get a few beers brewed before the end of the year.

Thanks everyone for such a great resource.

Tom

Kfun - your ratio doesn't sound like a problem to me.
I have a very light beer recipe that is approx 4 qt./lb

Try the BIABacus instead of the calculator as well.

Hi, i'm from Brazil, and a newbie on brewing. I have done two beer kits for an IPA(All grain) using biab on a 7,5 liter pot.
Now i want to experience doing my own recipes.
Also i have started a new project for an electric vessel (e-biab) as batching in a gas oven was not so precise(temp always going beyond the target).
I want to learn more about biab so i can enhance my brewing proccess and make my own great beers.
Thanks.
