Missed start gravity target

I missed the targeted start gravity by about 9 points , [my Pre Boil target was pretty much spot on] I suspect not a vigorous enough boil.
The wort is now ready for the fermenter is there any way I could add some Extract Maly to boost the gravity ?
Any suggestion most welcome.

Hi there Bernie and welcome to the forum :salute:,

If it was me, I'd be inclined to leave it as is for a few reasons. Firstly, a single gravity reading is very unreliable. Layering can occur, bits can get stuck to the hydrometer, temperature of the wort can be measured at too high a temperature - the list goes on. So, that's the first thing, your gravity reading could well be incorrect.

Secondly, most all-grain brews will taste excellent over a wide range of gravities and bitterness levels. I would much prefer a possibly lighter beer than expected than one that has been topped up with extract that might possibly taint the brew.

To be sure of readings, you really need to take several volume and gravity measurements throughout the brew if you can be bothered. The three sets can be worked to double-check each other. Without a double-check though you are really flying blind. On your next brew, let us know your plan and we'll be able to check it and also let you know the easiest places to take measurements.

Thanks for that, I did actually use a Refractometer and did the conversion, but will take your advice & leave it the way it is.

Howdy Bernie, Like PP said, we will help you to hit your flame out volume more spot on next time.

On my last brew, last Friday, I had to boil for 20 more minutes to hit my volume. You can measure your volume one of two ways, with a rod from the bottom to the top of the wort, or the headspace.

BIABBernie - can you account for the 9GP by an increased volume? i.e. do you have the same total GP just more of a weaker wort?

As you used a refractometer it may be interesting for you to see this post here.

I always think my gravities are off if I take a reading soon after flame out, but if you wait until after the wort has cooled, settled, and mixed properly, then things seem to be nearer to expected.

Oh dear BIABBernie you said the "R" word. :lol: (In house joke, PP will explain ;) )

I always take my last OG reading when I fill my fermenter as I seem to get results more in line with what I am expecting.Its one less thing to worry about after flame out and the wort has cooled and been mixed up. As long as you are there abouts volume wise the result should meet your expectations unless your efficiency is way up or down.
