Shack01, may88.

Welcome to the freedom of mashing and choosing from a bazillion types of grain, hops and yeast's. The simpler it gets, the harder it is to do? Well not really! BIAB gives you the simplest of brewing methods with the ability to make it as complicated as you want. I am a old fart and I brew simple. But younger and smarter brewers want a little more control. Here you will find the keys to whatever car you want to drive.

Hi May88 - Welcome to BIABrewer, if you have never tried all grain before you will be surprised how nice things turn out.

One thing I would be careful of is your pot size and expected volumes from it.
If it really is 19L (not a typo), then it would be difficult to get a high quality brew with 23 litres in your fermenter, unless of course you plan to mix batches or use extract etc.

Ciao Everybody from northern Italy.
I'm new to BIAB and just putting all the kit together. I have been doing kits for a while and wanted to have more control without going to a full all-grain setup.

Thanks Bob. You may have been asked this before but is that your real surname? :p

My pot had a no-show and now I'm waiting (impatiently) for ebay suppler to respond to my query... that's another week gone.

[Edit] Mally, didn't notice there was a page 151 and missed your post.
I have tended to brew simple brews around the 1.040 OG mark. Hoping MAXI-BIAB will stretch my pot volume a bit.
I saw a conservative figure of 115% so if say I get 18L then nearly another 2L so <20L. Let than I hoped.
Still I'm a newbie and I need to do my homework. Got to work out what to brew and then it's time for calculator lessons. :p

Hi Everyone: My name is Peter A. Bartman from Appleton Wisconsin, U.S.A. I've just started doing BIaB with my 4th brew just done a Dunkelwiezien. I've only been brewing for 4 or 5 years started out with extract. I made my own bag to use in my 8 gal. kettle. I also made a bag to put my hops in, works great. I'm looking forward to picking my fellow brewers brains when needed. I've alredy picked up valuable information. Have to say this I like using the BIaB method, got me doing all grain sooner than I was planning. Well Happy Brewing to you all. Peter

Hi from Adelaide Australia, new to brewing but I have one batch of BIAB porter ready for bottling tomorrow. Took some notes of what worked / didn't go quite as planned, and really looking forward to getting a second batch underway.

Hello from Sacramento, CA
I swear I had a username here before but it's been so long since the last time I brewed/lurked here that I couldn't be bothered to look it up...easier to start fresh :)
So, here I go with another shot at brewing. I'm excited to see the BIABacus and hope that it can help me better estimate and plan my brew days using all the techniques I'd like to incorporate i.e. BIAB, no-chill, FWH, post-mash steeping of spec grains, etc...maybe even step-mashing and fermenting in my boil keggle.

Thanks for all the innovation and hard work putting this site together. See ya' on the boards.

Hey I'm from Adelaide, South Australia but currently living in Norway.

I have been 'brewing' with hopped extract kits for a while (approx 20 batches) and have been desperately been wanting to move to all grain. (Money and space being the main issues seeing I'm a student and everything in Norway is expensive!)

My plan is to start with Mini-BIAB, most likely with a 25L pot, no chill and probably start with some SMaSH recipes to get me going. I'm a little worried about my pot size (I would like at least 12-19L batches) and no chill, but these compromises will save me significant amounts of money and let me invest in proper equipment when I move back to Australia.

I found this site to be a quality resource with lots of good information. I am also reading 'How to brew' by John Palmer as I'm sure many of you have done.

Looking forward to buying the remaining gear and planing my first batch :D

Welcome ascimps, I'm no expert here. You'll find my welcome post a page back but you should look at MAXI-BIAB, that's why I'm here, as it stretches the brewlength which sounds like it answers your concern.

I used hopped DME once. The IBU on the DME had a wide range and ended up so much earth flavour it was like drinking dirt. Nice by the time I drank the last bottle.

With that stuff you only need an electric kettle, a FV, a whisk and yeast. 2.5kg-3.5k of hopped DME, 4x 1.5L kettle boils and 17l of tap water. A kettle to FV and same in cold, whisk in bag of DME and repeat accordingly and then top up. should be about 20C and ready to pitch. Which is more or less what I did.

Hey may88

After posting that I found out what MAXI-BIAB was. (Previously I thought it was doing large batches).
I like the idea of MAXI-BIAB, it makes really good sense. My only issue now will be if my stove top (normal electric stove) could handle a 20L rolling boil. I've heard that insulating the kettle will improve the boiling capacity on a cooktop. I'm planning on using a foam camping mat as I've seen a few others do.

I haven't dried hopped DME, but it's basically the same concept as hopped LME (I'm guessing). Hopped LME was a perfect introduction to brewing (you learn to clean/sanitise things well, and the main procedures of fermentation and bottling).

One question I have regarding BIAB is if people are worried about the plastic qualities of the bucket used to spurge? Same thing goes for using a plastic spoon during the mash and boil.

Hi All,

I'm from Toronto, Ontario - working in the back-end side of the insurance business, and look forward to learning more about the BIAB process. We are lucky here with a lot of excellent craft brewers in the area, many of who have terrific one off's and seasonals.

I started off two years ago with a birthday gift of a couple of coopers LME+sugar kits, and have then moved to LME+steeped grain kits over the past year or so.

I've been wanting to get into a version of all-grain brewing to have more control over the recipe and process so I can find out exactly what I like and make it (or at least try to) myself.

Right now I've got some base grain thanks to a local group buy, and will be collecting some more equipment so I can do a full volume BIAB boil, but until then still stove-top with the kits.

I found the site, which I've only been able to graze at this point - there is so much info here, which is great. As for finding it, I can't remember exactly but it was either from the SOB's/MOB homebrew clubs or the infamous google.

Hi!

I'm Darren—from Auckland, New Zealand.

I've made one BIAB beer with a friend who has done a few kit brews over the years. I'm a bit craft beer fan and am super-keen to make some of my own.

I'm looking forward to trying a few brews on my own so am trying to get as much info/research as I can!

Cheers!
