Planning my first BIAB

Post #1 made 13 years ago
Firstly, I would like to thank everyone involved in the creation of this site, and all that have contributed in developing the BIABAcus. I can only imagine the hours that were spent. I would have never made the step to AG without your hard work and willingness to share. :salute:

I brew on an electric stove, have two pots (8.5 Gal & 5 Gal) and two bags. I have 2 small problems with my planned brew. Problem 1 is the BIABAcus says that my larger pot is too small to mash all the grains. I can deal with this by splitting the grain between 2 bags and doing 2 simultaneous mashes with both pots. Problem 2 is that it says I won't reach my target OG with the grains I have for the batch. The estimate is close enough that I will likely do the 2 bag, 2 pot mash as I described in the interest of a shorter brewday.

This all got me thinking about ways to increase effiency for future higher gravity brews. I'm guessing that it would raise effiency to mash the full grain bill in the larger pot, squeeze the bag, and then transfer the bag to the 2nd pot (dunk sparge?). Maybe this would only really help higher gravity brews. If so, when does it start to become useful (ie 1.070+?). How would this affect total mash time? 90 minute for both pots, or shorter for the second pot due to the grain already being saturated?

Maybe I should just go buy an extract kit :headhit: .

Good Day Jack, You should be able to MASH at least 12 pounds of grain and recover nearly 4 gallon of wort in the 8.5 Kettle, and Sparge another 3 gallons in the 5 gallon kettle.

If you look over the Maxi-BIAB Calculator at http://www.biabrewer.info/viewtopic.php?f=89&t=595

It will help doing a MAXI-BIAB.
