Hello,
My name in William and I live in Humboldt County, California, U.S.A. I only just heard about BIAB a few days ago, and wow, this seems like the way for me to go. I was contemplating starting with a few extract batches before moving to all grain to save on the initial start up costs, but now I think I'll start with BIAB. When I was in cooking school back in the late 80's, there was a brewing club that did all grain brewing using a converted Ice Chest as the MLT.

So far, I have been quite pleased with the wealth of knowledge available here.

Eastern Canadians are Maritimers.

Nova Scotians are a different kettle of fish from Newfies. Correct me if I am wrong Bluenose, as I wasn’t born here, I married a Nova Scotian though.

I’d love to go to Newfoundland some time. They are relaxed and friendly, and I hear the pubs in St John are fantastic and lots of fun.

Hello William, Nice to see you here. I expect someone will welcome you with a more detailed post. I’m just in the process of waking up this morning, but I had to deal with the ribbing from thughes :)

Welcome to the forum kitch :peace:,

Over-writing a recipe or equipment profile in BeerSmith2 is unfortunately pretty easy to do. I reckon a heap of people have done it and don't even realise they have :o.

Anyway, here you go ;).
(Just noticed in this that the Mash Tun Weight has a number in it. This should actually be zero for full-volume BIAB.)

Thanks for, "first-posting," to BIABrewer.info, Joco.

That's a very good question for a first post but I am worried that it might not get addressed in this thread. Fortunately, a new thread was started a few days ago that is ideal for having your question answered really well.

If you copy your post above and, if you can, the .bsm file to this thread called, Does this recipe have integrity? Can I copy it?, you will get some great answers.

Your recipe would be an excellent start to that thread so post away.

Hi All,
First post - I'm from Perth and really looking forward to BIAB. I've wanted to go full grain but been a bit put off by the complexity. This is a great site and full of really useful stuff.
Cheers,
Dan

Welcome to the forum Dan :salute:,

Bit cooler today than yesterday for us here in Perth. Phew!

I'm sure we'll get to have a beer one of these days. Make sure you subscribe to the topic Western Australian BIABrewers and Events. That way, if anything is going on here, you'll find out about it.

All the best,
PP

Hi all at BIAB,

Another Aussie here from the Hunter Valley, Australia.

I've been getting into the wealth of knowledge here at BIABrewer, and will soon be doing my first AG using BIAB. I have ordered one through Jeff Omundson through many recommendations, as i'm sure I wont be disappointed there.

I actually have a lot of equipment setup and ready using kegs that I have done up (to an unhealthy shine like BobbyM's ;) I don't know if it is a bad idea or not, but i'm basically using an all out AG system with the Bag replacing a false bottom...I just like the idea of the bag and the ease with which to extract all the grain...

I also have a great interest in whisky (Scotch, as per the spelling). So not all of my beer will be consumed after fermentation ;) Have read a lot on the methods associated there, and they tend to do a double batch sparge as opposed to fly sparging...obviously not so worried aobut the clarity of the wort.

That's about me wrapped up, I look forwrd to learning more and being able to contribute to this wealth on knowledge.

Cheers

Welcome aboard Val :salute:,

That's a nice place you hail from :peace:. But you're interested in whisky not wine .

As for using the bag as a manifold, it has heaps of advantages so go for it. I'm guessing you have two kegs and are using one as a tun and the other as a kettle? If this is the case then there's probably no advantage using the second kettle, just do everything in the one thing. If you get a second burner and bag, you'll be able to do two brews side by side ! (Just bear that in mind for the future.)

Or maybe you can mash up a whisky in the second keg :o.

First post here. Im from Sweden been brewing since 2009 and use to batch sparge, do 40 litre batches and chill with a plate chiller.
2012 i started to do 20 litres biab in my 50 litre kettle and i wont go back. Brewing outside even in the winter. Coldest brewday was -20C but it worked.
I also no-chill.

Post #3117 made 12 years ago
Good Day Nils-Alf, Welcome to the Forum!

Great to hear you Brewing BIAB, Well done!

It must be nice to brew at -20C, and be able to NO-CHILL quickly, by leaving it alone.

If you have quetions or Ideas, Please post!

Hey guys,

I'm jamey, 30 and I'm a switchboard manufacturer from point cook, vic Australia. I do both sheetmetal and electrical fit out I'm a sheety by trade, and building up an electrial fitter skill set.

Been brewing since November 2012 done 2 kits and 2 partial extracts and didn't really enjoy the process or final product.

After meeting other brewers from another forum and sampling ag beer I decided that I need to go BIAB.

I made my own voile bag with drawstring arrangement and I use the garage door operator bracket in my garage to hoist the bag.

I'm only using a 35 l pot and iv got a 2 ring burner both of which I acquired off another brewer.

I done a test run on Monday and made a simple brew
4kg Pilsen
500g pale
100g of each biscuit and cara malt
90 min mash
60 min boil
Saaz hops 30g@60 & 10g@ flameout
Whirl flock @ 5min

Tried to make 18l of brew to get into my cube for no chill at 1052.

I ended up with 15l at 1058 so iv added a few changes into beer smith so next brew should end up a bit closer.

I should be able to just hit my 18l @ 1050ish with my pots config by doing a small sparge if required to top up the boil volume.

Wort smelt and tasted very nice, I dropped into the fermenter @24c pitched safale s-33 then out to fermenting fridge and set it to 19c

8 hours later it was as active as iv ever seen a brew.

The BAG!!

Very happy to be ag brewing.

I'm still bottling but hoping to setup a nice bar fridge keg system at tax time. Getting the gear to do ag was my main focus.

Next in line is a 50l ss pot with dial thermometer and a brew stand to accommodate burner and have a hoist stand and swivel. Got good ideas for this.

Glad to find a community deadicated to Biab and iv done a lot of reading on here so far lots more to go :)

Cheers guys

Jamey

Cheers Mate,

I'm going to stick with Beersmith for now as i purchased it and i'm hoping with the equipment profiling i done after my first brew, i'm going to make the exact same brew next time and see if i cant get my numbers on track as my first BIAB brew was done with a blind profile so i'd like to see what my changes do.

Along with a few other small logistical changes i will make before my next brew, need to get a few small items to make things a bit easier on myself.

hope to get some more photos and keep things rolling :)

Is there somewhere on here i can start my own thread?? Like a m3taL's Brew House thread that i can post updates on my brewing and brew gear if others may be interested in keeping up with what im upto???

Cheers

Just start one Here , as you will be talking about your whole brewing experiance it will be difficult to pigeon hole your thread. If you have a specific topic though please post in the relevant section as it makes it easier for others to find. You can always put a link back to your "progress" thread.

Looking forward to see how you get on.

Hello everyone!

I really should have registered here a good while ago...

I've been brewing for a year and a bit now, starting as many do with kits and brewing some really quite special stuff with a few mods here and there.

I was always looking to cross the chasm to all grain brewing, for the challenge more than anything, but now that I have I can see why all the AG brewers were banging on about it so much!! I invested in a 70l stainless pot and a 50l insulated stainless which I'll eventually convert to a mashtun for a three vessel brewery but in the meantime, without the resources of time or money in ready supply, my eventual boiler has been pressed into service along with a couple of custom sewn grain bags (thanks Mum!) to produce 3 (one drinking now, one nearly in condition and one fermenting) all grain brews, the first a recipe from a book, the second a complete make-it-up with hops I love and the third an attempt to clone a commercial beer from limited data...

I settled on the pots I bought so that I could produce "double" batches of "big" beers if I wanted to in a three vessel setup. However I've since discovered just how easy BIAB is and I can see myself BIABing for "quick" brewdays even when I'm finally up and running with the full 3 vessel brewery. I'm left thinking "why would you bother?" for most simple beers in a 3 vessel brewery, BIAB is making me awesome beer so why add the extra step unless there's a good reason?

I also hang around on The HomeBrew Forum - I know that there is a fair amount of shared membership between here and there so "Hi!" to those I know already and "Good to meet you!" to those I don't.

Cheers

Calum

Good Day Calum(CalumScott), Welcome Aboard!

Great to hear you thinking of BIAB before you make the BIG mistake of brewing 3 Vessel.

1 Vessel, the only thing watch, a good temperature control, and a recipe and you'll get graet beer.

I hope the brew your drinkin is a great beer! If you have any questions about BIAB or 3V just post!!

Hello all,

(it's pretty obvious I've copied and pasted the "what-to-post" thing at the top...)

I'm elslow from Belfast. Got here from a link on Jim's beer site forum (somewhere). This all seems pretty interesting, I'm looking forward to learning some more. I've just finished making my first brew from a kit- not long to bottle it now. I am terrible for over-researching things, I've had homebrewing as a hobby in the pipeline since early October, so after making my first kit I was looking where to go next (before it's even bottled:-S) and I've landed here.

I work in pharmaceutical manufacture, which from what I can see so far, is very, very similar to commercial brewing, so I'm looking forward to getting involved...
