Hello from Colorado. I joined to learn more about brewing, and BIAB. Have done a few extract kits and one partial grain kit. I haven't been convinced that I want to go to all grain brewing, but want to learn!

Gday

I read about this site from AHB, am prepping myself (mentally and gear wise) for my first BIAB in a few weeks. Only brewed kits for a few months and am looking for my next challenge.

Cheers

Good Day JayPes, Welcome Aboard.

Since you brewed kits, maybe you steeped some Grains...

BIAB is not a very big change, it may look Difficult, but All-grain BIAB Is Not hard to do.

Check the CheckList, http://www.biabrewer.info/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=188 and see how a little Planning can make BIAB simple.

Hi, I'm Jamie from South Cheshire in the UK. I've done a bit of brewing in the past, kits beers, kit wines, country wines from fruit & veg picking. Love a good beer and have a good choice of local pubs that serve quality ales, and have also enjoyed supping down beer in Belgium and Germany enormously.

My Father in Law brews some of the best beers I've ever tasted, and he's a BIAB'er, and he's down visiting me next week from his home in the Highlands of Scotland to pass on the knowledge. Knowing how protective of his brewing he is (its taken me 16 years of marriage to convince him to show me anything at all!), I won't get it all  so I'll have to snoop around with a spy camera next time I'm up visiting with them to get all his recipes

I've been lurking on here for a couple of weeks while I get my kit together to make sure I was getting what I needed. I have a 6-gal Tea urn, a couple of FV's, a couple of pressure barrels and bought a bunch more stuff from the homebrew shop (an online retailer here in the UK). All I now need is a thermometer and I have my complete kit for the time being.

I'll post up once we do our brew next week, hopefully with some pictures, to let you know how it goes :)

Thanks for all the info!

Welcome Jamie

You'll soon be brewing beers to make your father in Law jealous. When you buy your thermometer And if you are going for a standard basic glasss type try to go to a HBS where you can pick your own. Go through there stock and look at what they are reading. Some will be different and saome will be reading the same, choose one or preferably 2 + of the latter. Thermoeters are a huge source for debate as they can invariably be inaccurate. Check out PP's post Here

If you want to go digital these are good and is what I use. Linky

Oh and you have got a bag !! I see you didn't mention it in your equipment list.. ;)

Well I've bought a Ritchies Mashing & Sparging bag, I hope its up to it? Thanks for the tip on the thermometers, I have got a LHBS, I didn't use them for the grain's and things I've bought as they're astronomically expensive in there, but if hands on is better for some things then I'll give them a whirl. Re: the Grains I mentioned, I've bought some Maris Otter, and my Father in Law is bringing down the other bits and bob's to make the full grain bill. I don't even know at this stage what I am going to be brewing!

thanks again for the welcome :)

Hi Jamie

Good advice there from yeasty.

I have an ETI thermometer which is calibrated & certificated (at 0 and 100 only), but they are expensive. Read that link, it is an eye opener.
i wouldn't know about the bag you have, as most of us use Swiss voile material. Again you should find lots of info about the material on here too.

I do not use a LHBS anymore, and have found the "worcester hop shop" to be very good (and the cheapest), and the "malt miller" cannot be beaten on service.
I work in Cheshire so you are not too far away if you ever need help.

Cheers!

I've been an extract and partial mash brewer for five years (with a one year hiatus)and will be taking the plunge into all grain soon. I came across the BIAB technique and believe that it is the answer, to go all grain with the equipment I already have. Im usualy brew ale, but I want to try lagers now that I have the room.

Hi all,

I'm from Leeds in the UK, only done a couple of 2 can kits but loving getting great results, looking at skipping extract and moving straight on to BIAB and this looks like the place that's gonna teach me all I need to know.

Post #2963 made 13 years ago
Welcome aboard WTX and charva :peace:,

You might find after WTX has done a few pure BIAB's (full-volume mashing) charva that he'll tell you that it's easier than extract and partial brewing because in most ways it is. There's less to learn in some ways and the pure ingredients are a lot more forgiving. For example, you can make a big mistake in your ingredient bill in all-grain and nearly always still end up with a great beer.

WTX, I think you'll really enjoy the extra flexibility that all-grain gives.

charva, if you think you might have to wait a while before getting your equipment, you could brew a fresh wort kit in the meantime. These are expensive but easier than normal kits to brew and the the wort is all-grain. They are usually very good.

Will look forward to hearing how you go :salute:.

Hello all! I live in Tampa, Florida, USA and am a brand new brewer. At the present, I am collecting equipment for BIAB brewing while my fermenters are working on non-brew beverages (cider and mead). Just picked up a 60 qt Winco/Update Int'l. Stainless pot and have a bag on order. Still need the burner and a way to cool. Trying to figure out the information presented here, but having trouble with unit conversion. Wish there was a second page to the calculator for us metric-illiterate Americans.

Welcome Belenus! Search the forums here for information on "no-chill", it's a great way to save on equipment costs and knock some time off your brew day.

Ah, I thought I had already posted here and was wondering why I couldn't post anywhere else.

My name's Scon and I did a bit of brewing in my early 20's but never really stuck with it. Now I've finally bought my own place I can set myself up with a proper brewery. I'm located in Queanbeyan, just outside Canberra and havve just made my first BIAB batch, the All Amarillo APA. Loved the process and should be making batch #2 this weekend.

Hello!

I'm William, from California, and I'm just getting into home brewing. It's something I've been wanting to do for quite some time but I could never get over the hurdle of the starting costs (being the sole bread-winner for my family). A couple months ago, a friend of mine introduced me to the BIAB method and it didn't take me long to get all the equipment after that! I'm brewing my first ever batch tomorrow (Christmas porter) and jumping into the all-grain world at the same time. Luckily, I've got my brewing buddy there to walk me through it, but I've also been trying to find a good community like this made up solely of BIABers so I can get more opinions on things, share recipes, and all that good stuff. I just stumbled on this site using a quick google search and hope that I can find some useful info on here!

WilliamH, Welcome to the best non-conformist brew site on the web. Pull up a chair, grab a cold one, and feel free to pick our brains and contribute your own bits of wisdom.

(And don't believe BobBrews when he tells you that the Black IPA he just poured for you is a "session ale".)

Hello from Amherst, Mass. This is an agricultural area, and now some small farms are converting to local grains and hops for brewing. Nearby is the first malt house on the east coast! http://valleymalt.com

Found you with a link from http://homebrewtalk.com BIAB forum.

I am so hooked. It took only one 2.5 gal BIAB with sweet local malt after several bland batches of Mr. Beer. The first pot was too small. The 30 liter pot is too big. Must find something appropriate for half batches.

Currently I telecommute from the fermenting room, with the relaxing sounds of percolating airlocks on mead, cider, and malt.

Great first post Epimetheus :salute:

Hope you can keep us updated on the development of grains and hops in your area. That's pretty interesting.

Also hope we can help you out here occasionally.
