Mold on my bucket

Post #1 made 13 years ago
As the title says I have a light mold on my bucket lid, Haven't looked inside yet. I had it fermenting on top of an AC vent then moved it to a fridge, there was some mold on the side of the bucket at that time, I used some pbw and oxye clean. to remove it aqnd then used some star san. the fridge got unplugged for a day and I noticed the mold on the lid. it's time to bottle now. Do I have a problem? :dunno:

I think if it's on the outside ob, you will probably be okay. It's probably just a bit of spilt stuff combined with the air con environment especially if an evaporative air con.

I really think you need to clean with detergents and sanitise with an acid so I'd get an acid-based sanitiser (iodine or something like Star-San) to accompany your PBW. Hit the lid and outside with that before bottling. I believe but might be wrong that Oxy-Clean (Nappy-San) will build up a layer over time where bacteria can become trapped.

After doing the above, pull the lid off and have a quick look and then cover the top with a clean towel. If you don't see any alien life forms in there, have a taste of the wort. That will tell you if something has gone horribly wrong. (If we never hear from you again, I'll assume tasting the wort was bad advice and will never give it again ). If no horrible taste, bottle away.

Seriously, I think dong the above is fine. The only worry I have is where you say air con and I am thinking of legionnaire's disease or something that comes from air con. From memory, it's air-borne though.

My fingers are crossed for you :peace:,

Im with PP here.

Mold on the outside? I think your OK. Mold on the inside? :o A quick taste before just you bottle will tell the tale.

Is it really humid where you are? Mold on an exterior surface of a bucket seems a bit odd.

I came home from a 2 week vacation once and found my fermentation fridge full of mould.I had left a carboy in there and no air circulation.
The beer was fine but,I did an intense bleach bomb cleansing and airing out after.
One year later and it hasn't returned.

Thanks for the reply guys. Just to clear up a few things, the first week on the AC vent, was real AC, plus I had it in a big tub of water with a tee shirt, so it was an evap cooler also. I'm reasonably sure there is no problem as I sanitized with Idophore real well before filling the ferment bucket. My biggest worry now is the fridg was unplugged for a day or two, but I have it filled with water bottles, to take up space. So I'm thinking all that cold water kept the temp down enough. I will hose it down real well with sanitizer before I open it. Then the fridg will be cleaned up also, for the next batch.

Went ahead with bottleing, taste is good, there was no need to panic.
scrubed the bucket and lid real well, with PBW and let dry in the sun. that should take care the mold.

Good on you ob ,

Don't forget what I mentioned re using an acid after cleaning.

A lot of brewers start out and have no problems for months/years. Suddenly they start getting an infection and can't work out why . I suspect that one big reason for this is the slow build up of the microbial layer that occurs when not following through with an acid.

So, buy some idophor or Starsan before your next brew I reckon and hit everything with that.
