What and where to get bag material?

Post #1 made 13 years ago
I have been reading through the forums and know that Voile seems to be the way to go for a bag but when I search google to find some to buy I only find curtain material and ranging in price from £1.50-£15.00 per M. There are no specs on it so I have no idea what to get. Can someone point me in the right direction as I assume you all have a bag? Also do I need special thread or is cotton ok?

Thanks in advance

p.s. I will be using a 40L buffalo boiler if it makes any differance.

Voile is used for curtains so it may be the right stuff. Post a link from your search's and we can see what you are talking about.

Where are you in the uk ? I've got a mill shop here in Bolton that has reams of ther stuff. If you want I can get some and pop it in the post.

For sewing your best with a polyester thread and your bag should be big enough so that your pot will fit inside it.

Dunelm looks like the gear.. here's a few pictures of my voile.

The one with the torch is a bit misleading as the maglight is a small pencil battery one so the weave looks quiet large but infact it is very fine.

Hope this helps

The maglite one did get me. It looks like a full size maglite. Dunelm is good news as it's close to me and the cheep option.

Thanks again Yeasty. I can't wait to start my first AG BIAB brew. I'm starting to get realy excited. I ordered my 40L boiler today, I got a cube from amazon 2days ago and Ive got my malt and hops planed out for an erdinger clone and a nice sounding Bock and ill make my bag during the week ready for the weekend. Bye bye kit beer I'll miss you

You know that

Erdinger clone came from here

http://www.thehomebrewforum.co.uk/viewt" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ... 14&t=10257

I'm new to BIAB so am assuming that it will work just the same even tough it was made for "normal" 3V AG brewing.

Any recipe will work for Biab, you just need to calculate your volumes and grain bill so that they will fit your pot.

Forget the oat hulls, you won't need them doing a BIAB mash as you will be using all your water or nearly all at once and you won't get a stuck mash. I say nearly all as you might want to calculate for a bigger batch than your pot can handle during the mash phase. So by holding back some water whilst mashing then adding it back after the bag is removed means you can maximise the amount of beer you can get from your system ( do a search for MAXI-BIAB).

Have you looked at the Calculator for converting the recipe ? if you get stuck let us know.

I've had the best results with bags made from Amazon voile. It drains well and is quite strong - the only downside it that small holes have started to appear in the bag - that is after 30 brews and I'll keep on using it for a while still.
Polyester thread would be best to use but double or triple stitching with cotton thread will also be ok.

Enjoy!

Got the Voile from Dunelm Mill yesterday and my cube has just arrived. Wish I'd got 2 now after all that reading about Maxi-BIAB. I may just try a simple 23L for my first brew and then when I am comfortable with my set up try a Maxi and start messing with things.

p.s. loving the forum :champ:
