Good Day, Really In America, we have 120volt 60hz AC, and a 240volt system in every house with at least 100 ampere current. There is 545 watts per Horsepower here, but we pay Kilo-Watt-Hours for our power. Here in Tennesse It cost $0.098us per KWH.

maybe if it was drachmas it would be cheaper :dunno: :p

Really mate, I already feel awful about the amount already there and I know that most the people
in the world are not in the best economic position, so don't make things worse!!!

At times like these I really wish I was more experienced and be able to develop the BIABacus
much faster and not having to spend so much time studying the Yii framework etc... :(

Here it's pretty cheap like 7cents, though the last 5 yeasts(Euro currency and after that IMF etc)
the cost of a kWh has risen like 500% or maybe more.

Thanks for the enquiry BeachBum. Kostas is free to spend the cash as he sees fit. We are still a few dollars short of the $350. Donations can be done via the donate button and a running tally is being kept here along with the names of those who have contributed.

I my industry, a 1 hp motor 3ph 480v(nevers runs full load) uses between 480watts and 575watts. we rate it 545watts. Sorry for my error!

To All, I have "TVA power" You can Google it. http://www.tva.com/power/index.htm

I've already made some donations before this fund-raiser so am happy not to do another one. I never thought we'd come close to getting the amount so the response and continued interest has been a great surprise, especially your $80 donation :o. I thought I was going to be having to dig deep to cover a shortfall.

Anyone who does donate until we reach the $350 will have their name published in the thread. Also, anyone who has made a donation since BIABrewer opened or who donates prior to the release of the BIABacus we will try and reward down the track so hopefully it will be a win-win for everyone.

Thanks to all of those like yourself who have let me off the hook .

We currently pay $0.22 per KWh and it's about to go up to $0.28.

Luckily we have 3.995 KWh potential of solar panels on the roof so no electricity bills in this house.

Whew did I ever misread that post. :headhit: I thought Joshua was paying .98/kwh and wondered how he could keep his lights on.

I'm still not sure that it's right Lylo. We have 240V on a 15 amp circuit which gives a potential of 3600 Watts.

Joshua says he has 240V on a 100 Amp circuit which would give a potential of 24,000 Watts. I don't think that'd be right.

He either meant 24V or 10 Amp, 1 or the other.

Good Day Hashie, I have the power TO the house of 100amp/240volt service.
I can install 20,30,40,and 50amp outlets and breakers for 240volt circuits.
Our electric stoves need 50amp/240v, water heaters 30amp or 40amp. and electric brewing equipment 20 or 30 amps. And the power bill is BIG at 0.098cents(us) per KWH

No worries Joshua, here the standard is 240V 10 amp or 15 amp for General purpose. I'm sure the cooker and hot water would be more.

Cheers

[Joshua, Nuff has been the largest financial donator to the site to date and also does a lot behind the scenes. He will keep his pledge but I'm hoping it will be zero.]

I've just finished another Skype with Kostas. In these almost daily Skypes, he seems to be very adept at avoiding the subject of what he should do with your donation. I believe his thinking is that if he and I just find something more important to work on, he can delay accepting your thanks .

He has a few brewers visiting from Athens for the first time over the next few days to brew beers for a comp. They are doing this in his 10 L pot :?. He's worried that he won't have time to work on the BIABacus or communicate with me over the next few days. This is great! I could certainly use a rest :P. So, I've asked him to totally forget the BIABacus for the next five days and just concentrate on having fun brewing some beer, thinking on what to buy, and writing to this thread. Nothing more.

We need to wrap this gift up at some point so if I see no result here within 5 days, I will PayPal the money to Nik and make the forwarding of your gift his problem .

Lol and over to you Kostas. Enjoy,
Pat

I'm extending Kostas' deadline as we seem to be making some progress as can be seen from this post. Having to brew 6 beers for a comp all in a row using a 10 L pot seems to have worn him down. In fact, an email I received from him two days ago started with, "Hey mate, I'm starting to hate brewing..."

He wasn't serious but he is certainly seeing the benefits of a decent sized kettle now :interesting:.

On top of the above, he's had something even more exhausting and a lot more important to deal with. I'll advise those who have contributed funds what this is. Suffice to say that some brews this week he has finished at 6am.

Via Skype today, he told me that nik has given excellent advice on sources of good equipment as well as offering to help with any drilling etc should it be required. So, things are definitely moving ahead.

Yes, I'm impressed Kostas has been able to think on anything over the last week .

I've also had some comms with him over the last week and there are two things he'd definitely like more info on and then to think through. Nik has offered to help him make nik's Ultimate BIAB Vessel. Very good of you nik . However, Pernod's post here he thinks also has a lot of merit.

I'll PM Pernod and see if he can give some more info.

What should Kostas do with your $350?

Post #42 made 13 years ago
By popular/PistolPatch request, I'll add some more context on the immersion element. I have a 30 litre pot, and usually start with 27 to 28 litres. I usually hover around the brewpot while brewing, and have managed to avoid boil overs so far ...

Evaporation is in the neighbourhood of 3-4 litres per hour, and far exceeds the capacity of my kitchen fan. When I combine the stove and element it usually takes less than 30 minutes from end of mash temperature to boil at full capacity. I tend to dunk/batch spare in a plastic fermenter bucket after pulling and squeezing the bag, and by the time I'm done with this the boil has usually almost started. I'll switch off the stove and maintain a good rolling boil with only the element.

I don't have exact figures, as I'm on vacation and left the brewsmith at home.

Wow! That was quick Christian. Thanks a heap :salute:,

So many things to think on. I love nik's insulated vessel and your immersion element. The only problems (all solvable I think?) I see with the immersion element are...

1. Suspending it so you don't have to hold it. The only solutions I see are a bit clumsy.
2. Making the power adjustable - If it is not powerful enough, the element might not even bring your water to the boil. If it's too powerful, it might make the boil too wild. There must be a way of adding a 'dimmer' to an immersion element so the temp can be controlled nicely?

The other electric options as far as I can see are...

1. Exposed element - Like Nik's Ultimate BIAB vessel.
2. Concealed element - Like in some urns.

The problems with these are firstly whether they are powerful enough. The second problem is if they are easy to clean. The third problem is whether they will burn your bag.

My head hurts ,

Good Day, Maybe Kostas could use what we call a "hotplate" with 220v/240v and a 15amp outlet, Hecould use a 3200watt hotplate for 23L brews, AND use it for cooking, or frying like another Stove heater.
Just a thought from my electric brewing!

I was talking with Nik today we've kind of decided to go with a 50lt insulated thing and a hand element.
I haven't been able to find a good place to get the element that is both cheap and good quality
but I'll try to do that tomorrow. Thanks Nik about the chat ;)

I'm almost finished with one of the last brews(tomorrow will be the last) and I'm really exhausted!
I did like 66 lt(VIF) with 6 batches and considering the batch tomorrow I'll have brewed almost 80lt
in 6 days! And the mashing of each brew were so long...It's the first time I've finished before midnight!
I'm so happy, I'll sleep properly today, hooray!!!

*Oh I must not forget to tell you all, I have a borrowed "mash bag" from brouwland that is the worst...
I get like 2+lt trub, it has a very coarse bottom, why did they make it like that???

I totally love homebrewing and I even did it with a 5lt kettle before getting this
borrowed 10lt pot, but after this experience I begin to understand how important is to
have proper equipment.

Considering the current situation and unemployment in Greece I don't
think I would be able to get something even close to proper equipment in the
near future! Thank you all guys!!!!!!!!

Post #47 made 13 years ago
Finally one day without a brew!
I really wish the 10 lt pot was mine and I could record a video destroying it,
it's just so bad for brewing, soooo bad! My advice to all of you is never attempt to brew
~80lt of wort in 7 days with a 10 lt pot!

About the equipment Nik suggested this pot
http://cgi.ebay.fr/MARMITE-THERMOS-CAPA ... 482wt_1396
which Nik is using and it works like a charm in maintaining the temperature.

Nik added an element on the pot by customizing it, but I haven't got any equipment to do that kind of customization
and Nik lives like 200km from me :) So I've decided on a handheld element.
The only thing I can't decide and find a good/cheap place to get is the handheld element.

If anyone has any suggestions or has any experience I could use a bit of help.
It's not though like I'm in a hurry!

Good Luck
Wow nice info and pretty detailed!

From what we've talked a bit with Nik it's better to just get the 50lit vessel for starters
and then he offered to do the customization when I get to Athens because the handheld element
might seems an easy idea but on the long run it might prove less reliable than a proper heating
element. And it's even cheaper that way too!!!

So Nik thanks a heap once more mate!

Hey guys!

It's been so long since the last time I could sit relaxed in front of a computer.
A huge amount of crazy stuff happened for me the last few months but if nothing
happens again I'll be around more from now on.

Because autumn is slowly here and the new brewing season is coming to Greece, we were
talking with Patrick about ordering the brewing equipment. As typical as it may sound,
I really thank you all guys again, I would never buy proper brewing equipment without your help!

So hello from me again and cheers :)
Kostas
