Promotion Ale - My first BIAB

Post #1 made 14 years ago
Mid April I had a spate of events to celebrate. It was my birthday, I bought an electric boiler and a proper wort chiller and my football team, Charlton Athletic won promotion. :champ: Time to celebrate....time to brew!

Promotion Ale

4.1kg Maris Otter
550g Amber Malt
375g Crystal 55L

45g Fuggles @ 75 mins
10g E K Goldings @ 75 mins
20g E K Goldings @ 15 mins
20g Chinook @ 5 mins

90 min mash
90 min boil

1/2 Protofloc tablet @ 10 mins

Muntons Ale Yeast

10 days in fermenter

Kegged in plastic pressure barrel

This was my first BIAB AND my first AG brew AND the first use of my new boiler (40L Buffalo).

I had planned thoroughly and rechecked everything the day before to ensure I knew what I was doing! I woke up ridiculously early and took the plunge.

Amazingly everything went according to plan and I ended up with 23L of wort in my fermenter, looking and smelling like it should!

After 10 days I kegged my beer and had a quick quality control sample (just to make sure) and it certainly tasted like beer.

2 weeks later (today) I thought I had better test another sample and this is without doubt the best beer I have made. It still needs to finish clearing which I'm hoping doesn't take too long but I am very happy with the results of my efforts.

I have a chocolate stout in my fermenter now (brew 2) and I am hooked on BIAB.

Thanks to everyone who has shared knowledge and information on here, I hope to be able to return the favour in the future.

Good on you Adman and thank you for giving us your report. Nice job .

Planning the day before always seems to make things run smoothly and the brew day relaxing. A lack of planning and drinking early on the brew day can lead to some funny stories though.

Great news. The Administrator here did tell you that it's customary to send a sample of your first brew to all of the regular members, right? I'll PM you my mailing address...I'm sure the others will follow suit. Congratulations!

Hi Irishstavros

I started out with 38l of strike water for the mash and ended up with 22l in the fermenting bucket.

The amount of evaporation does seem to depend on atmospheric conditions as after 4 brews I have ended up with 4 different amounts of wort in the bucket.

The colder the weather the more I seem to lose.

I know this doesn't help too much but it is a learning process for me as well.

Thanks for the reply adman. Interesting I just did a dry run with 30l of water, boiled for 90mins, with the lid off. Ended up with 21l left. Am going to try a landlord clone soon. Just waiting for my quote from customBIAB for my bag and am going to order some grains and give it a go will prob put about 35l. And top up at the end, better with to little than to much. Do you leave your lid off adman

Hi Irishstavros

Yes I leave the lid off. I read somewhere that the evaporation gets rid of some "nasties" that you don't want in your beer.

To reduce evaporation I have also read about floating a tin plate on the boiling wort but have yet to try this.

So many variables, eventually we will find the best way of doing this, but until then I'll keep experimenting and drinking the results!
