All-Grain Kits

Post #1 made 14 years ago
So I'm moving up to All-Grain, and BIAB has grabbed my attention for many reasons. My questions are:

Can I just get an all-grain kit from somewhere and brew it following BIAB method? Or would I need to get more grains?

Also, I've noticed that all-grain kits are usually cheaper than extract kits. If I was to follow some recipes on the forums, or make one my own, does the cost of ingredients come out to about the same as a pre-made kit?

Thanks!

billyshears66,

(Black IPA All-Grain Kit $34.50 US) (Black IPA Extract Kit $39.99 US) Same beer! All grain is cheaper and more fun to brew than extract! Both make good beer! Extract is not any lesser quality than all grain. It cost's money to mash grain and boil it down to syrup or dry it all up for dry malt extract DME. That is the difference! BIAB uses the same recipes as 3V (old fashioned brewing). I started buying extract kits. I then converted to 3V. Now I am sold on BIAB. You can save time by just doing BIAB!

I have done a few of these when I started, They are hard to beat for quality.
Joshua,

I agree. I order from NB Monday and (usually) Tuesday I receive it! Never a problem. In fact, I print out their recipes and brew them almost exclusively. I used the Black IPA (my personal favorite) in the example above. I have been tweaking the Black IPA no end! I won first place with a version of it last month. This is the same recipe that I just used to try fermenting in the no chill cube! I tasted it yesterday and it seems about the same but perhaps a bit more hoppy than usual? It may be that it needs more time as I just kegged it yesterday!

I actually had the guts to put another version of my Black IPA (with peated malt) into the N/C cube that I had just fermented in!! That baby was perking so quickly and vigorously that I popped the air lock! I had forgotten to put in Fermcap as I was reusing the yeast cake (and trube). I put in a few drops and the overflow of krausen subsided.

How is that for off subject!
