Scaling Brews

Post #1 made 14 years ago
Hi All

First post after the initial registration, so here goes.

As a long time extract brewer, having made about 90 brews, two of which only were the same recipe, I though that when moving to BIAB I would develop maybe half a dozen favourite recipes and brew them regularly. While experimenting with styles, I don't really want to brew 23 litre batches and then have to drink it all while waiting to develop or tweak the recipe. Accordingly, I thought I would do a batch of wort, and divide it into two or three smaller batches and then use different yeasts for fermentation. I thought I could also divide the batch pre-boil and play with different hops and hop times.

Does this make sense? What are the smallest batches folk are fermenting?

Cheers

Bob

PS I just thought given I haven't got one BIAB done yet, maybe I should learn to walk before running.

many people do mini-biabs with yields between 5 and 10L, I have heard of people doing gallon brews too, which is about 3.8L

I think I would suggest doing a couple of mini-biabs at once on a stove top if you want to get many recipes knocked off quickly.

you can then just ferment in glas 5L or 10L flaggons or cubes etc.

Hi Bob,

I have just started to do small batch brewing of 5L. Just to get through my wish list of brewing that only seems to grow!

I have only just bottled my first batch (and that was well over gravity @ 1.083) so I can't comment on the best way to scale recipes yet. I have just scaled them down exactly ie: 20g hops in a 20L batch is now 5g of hops in a 5L batch.
I have been told that the bittering additions may need to be lessened so I will be doing a side by side brew soon to find out how much if at all it does change.

I NC in a 5L cube and ferment in a 10L cube. Seems to be working well so far.

I would also be interested to hear from other brewers experiences

Thanks

Once I have a couple of full sized brews down, I'll explore some of the smaller batches. It seems most brewing software has options for scaling recipes, so might check them out.
