Ready to go!

Post #1 made 14 years ago
Finally I'm ready! I've got my bag, malts, hops, grain mill and so on.
I think this weekend I'll move my first step in AG brewing!

But I've got one last minute question...

I realize that I didn't buy any PH meter and correctors. Do I really have to worry about it during the mash?
Maybe I could use bottled water instead of tap water, so probably I can read water's PH level on the label. But water's PH is not wort's PH, am I right?

Don't sweat the ph at this point Zelig. You will have your hads full worrying about all kind of ther unnecessary details.Main thing IMO is an accurate and steady mash temp. this alone will keep you on edge enough.Have fun and good lick!

+1 Don't sweat it for a while. If you find out that you really like the technical side of brewing, then by all means buy a pH meter. As for the water, I would use your tap water. As long as the water alone tastes good, then you should be OK using it.

Correct. The pH will drop considerably (and mostly unpredictably) once you add the grains so the initial water's pH really tells you very little about what the mash pH will be.

I did buy ph test strips that I use mostly to monitor my starsan.
The strips are fairly cheap if you can find them.I got mine on ebay. The s&h was way more than the product!

I prefer my strips to my ph meter...

I don't have to clean and calibrate strips
