Do you stir religiously

Post #1 made 14 years ago
Hi guys,

Just a thought, how often are you guys stiring during your mash.
I dough in stirring continuously making sure it is all mixed well, check temp, cover then leave.
I come back after 20 mins to check temp, while lid is off might as well give another stir.
After about 40mins check temp, another stir.
If I need to adj. temp. will stir continuosly.
after the 90 min mash take lid off, flame on to mash out temp, none stop stiring until I hit mash out.
Cover and leave for 10 - 15 mins after mash out couple of quick stirs, lift bag and drain.

I was just wondering if people stirred more or less.
Also I should changed stir to pump now I have my new home made oversized masher, heaps easier

Less for me. Once the grain is in I give it a stir to ensure there are no clumps, then leave it for 90 minutes.
Stir while the flame is on for mash out, then leave again.

I mash the grain with a large potato masher while I'm heating it.

On my last brew I decided to check temp/reheat/mash every 15 minutes. It was cold so I was losing a degree every 15 minutes

But, and I blame the extra agitation, I managed a 95% mash efficiency!

I stir in the sign of the cross....I was thinking of spelling out JWH next time and if all else fails I'll check with the dark side and stir in a pentagram shape.

I'm an atheist but it can't hurt right :):):)

I stir it in to ensure a good mix and no clumps. After the big stir I rarely touch it for 90 minuets. Especially if I am cooking a couple of eggs in it.

Lol, good to see some humour now and then! :P
I don't stir religiously at all, for a single infusion I'll stir singly at mash in and leave it to its saccharification rest in peace.

As I'm popping the lid and jumpers on I'll offer the Pastafarian Saccharifice:
"May the Flying Spaghetti Monster's pirate enzymes enjoy peace, warmth and tranquillity in their wondrous works so providing divine libation for His Pastafarian disciples and through the bountiful surplus His noodly appendage may continue to touch all of humankind bringing harmony, beer and bolognese. Ramen."

I'm a bit Catholic about my stirring. I feel guilty if I don't :dunno:.

Other things I do, also make me feel guilty :o

The reality is until we collect more figures, we will never know the path best travelled.

There was quite a few different Subject headings I could have put in that would have had equally interesting comments

Love it
I pretty much stir my mash if I have to check temp or raise temp (thought if I have to take the lid off might aswell give it a few pumps) other than that I just leave it.
