Recipe suggestions for leftovers

Post #1 made 13 years ago
hey new BIAB brewer here...I have some ingredients leftover from steeping/adding to extract brews. Any ideas for a recipe using my leftovers?

Malts.. I have Crystal 40L, 120L, Special B 140l & Pale Chocolate 200L. About 400g of each (just under 1 lb)
This might be the wrong thing to say... but I also have some pale DME that I don't mind adding if that helps.
Hops... Willamette, EKG, Fuggles, Cascade. about 50g ea (just under 2oz).

No yeast, have to order that.

FWIW, I'll be using a small 15l pot on the kitchen stove for a test batch or 2 (will get full size gear in a couple months). I'm hoping to get 10l into the fermenter, will try mash with whatever volume fits my pot then top up water during the boil.

Good Day Jamesp, The Crystal/Caramel/Roast grains can make a good Porter/Stout.

You will need some Pale Ale/2Row/6row/Marris Otter/Pilsner base grains.

So a primitve recipe would be 1800Gr/4pounds of pale malt, and a 500 gram/1.1Pound mix of the dark grains.

Using more of the 40 and 120 will give a deep caramel/raiseney flavor or a greater amout of Special"b" and Chocolate will give a roasty/coffee/chocolate flavor.

You could use Fuggles with a schedule of 10Gr-60minute, 5gr-7minute and 5gr at flame out,

The color will be around 20-30SRM, With a 90 minute mash at 155-157, will yiead a 1.048/1.052 sweet to roasty Porter with an IBU around 24-30.

There are many programs for brewing like http://brewtarget.sourceforge.net and places for rcipes like http://www.brew-monkey.com/recipes/reci ... .php?id=12 for ways to formulate good beers!

ok cheers. I've seen a few programs (not the ones you linked though) & have the BIAB Calculators from this site.

I'm a big fan of dark beers so a roasty/coffee stout or porter would be good! Maybe I'll get some Pale Ale grains, I gather they can be used as a base for lots of beer styles.

Its all a bit confusing trying to figure out recipes when I don't know the effects of the different base ingredients... guess I'm doing this backwards. I might aim to get a couple ingredient kits &/or make a couple SmaSh batches to determine ingredient flavor impacts. But like I said, I'm just trying to use these ingredients in the meantime.

Anyways thanks heaps for the suggestions! I will experiment & will see what happens.

Good Day Jamesp,

Just a quick post about recipes,
95% base grains/5% lite roast/caramel makes a Pale ale/lager
90% base grains/10% medium roast/caramel makes a Brown ale
80% base grains/20% darker raost/Caramel makes a mile Porter
75% base grains/25% dark roast/black makes a Stout.

The Larger grain Bill, the stronger the beer,
Session beers have 1.030-1.040 S.G.
Mild beers are 1.040-1.048 SG
Normal beers are 1.050-1.058 SG
Strong/Robust beers are 1.060-1.078 SG
And BarleyWines are 1.080+ s.g.

Hops are another thing since variety, alpha acid, beta acid, and many other things make it difficult to use Hops off-handedly, A program is needed!!!

Good Luck, experimenting can be a great hobby!!!

Thylacine, I am a Seppo, so I have to say "Good Day", "Well done,Sir" and "Good for you" and
"yes, a Bar-Be-Qed Shrimp would be nice"

Because if I say "Wus up Dude, You in the know, or is it going Down" may not be understood across the World.

Welcome
I'm actually in Invermere. there are a couple of wine making UBrew stores here but they don't do beer & don't seem very interested in ordering beer stuff. I've ordered from Hopdawgs & they seemed good - good range & quick.

Not sure what's down in Cranbrook, but its nearly 2hrs drive so its easier & cheaper just to order & pay the shipping from Vernon.
