Maxi-BIAB recipe help

Post #1 made 13 years ago
Hi all,

After doing a couple of mini-BIABs I want to have a crack at a maxi-BIAB to get me up around 20L brew length.
10L wort seem like a lot of work for not much drinking :drink: !!

NRB's All Amarillo APA from here...
http://www.biabrewer.info/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=14

I've plugged all the numbers into Stux's Maxi-BIAB Calculator Jun29.
And come out with this...

OVERVIEW

Style: American Pale Ale
Name: NRB's All Amarillo American Pale Ale...ish
Yeast: Wyeast American Pale Ale 1056
Fermentation Temperature: 18 C
Original Gravity: 1.058
Total IBU's: 31.0
Colour (EBC): 24.6
Efficiency at End of Boil: 83%
Mash Length (mins): 90
Boil Length (mins): 90
Your Vessel Type (Pot/Keggle/Urn): Pot

Volumes etc.

Your Vessel Volume (L or gal): 25 L
Your Vessel Diameter (cm or in): 32.8 cm
Water Required (L or gal): 34.64 L
Mash Temperature (C or F): 65 C
Volume at End of Boil (L or gal): 26.8 L
Volume into Fermenter (L or gal): 23 L
Brew Length (L or gal): 21.3 L
Total Grain Bill (g or oz): 5818 g

Grains - Colours - Percentages and/or Weight (g or oz)

Grain 1: Simpsons Golden Promise - 5-7 EBC - 76.8% or 4,468 g
Grain 2: Joe White/Maltcraft Light Munich - 12-20 EBC - 15.4% or 896 g
Grain 3: Weyermann Caraamber - 60-80 EBC - 7.8% or 454 g

Hops - AA% - IBUs - Weight (g or oz) at Minutes

Hop 1: US Amarillo - 8.6AA% - 21 IBUs - 26 g at 60 min
Hop 2: US Amarillo - 8.6AA% - 11 IBUs - 23 g at 20 min
Hop 3: US Amarillo - 8.6AA% - 3 IBUs - 18 g at 5 min

Adjuncts/Minerals/Finings etc

Finings: 1/2 tablet of Whirfloc at 10 min.

How'd I go  ??
I'm planning to no-chill, is that going to have any great impact on the hop additions??

Thanks again in advance :salute: .
Jake.

Sorry you haven't been able to get some help yet jake.

I think you're recipe conversion looks great - good on you. The real trick with Maxi-BIAB is volume management and it's effect on your efficiecny. For example, if you simply added water during the boil or to the fermentor, your efficiency will go down. Using a sparge will compensate for this or even increase your efficiency.

Stux is the best bloke to help you with this. I would post here...

1. What size your kettle is.
2. What your kettle diameter is (or, if you know it, how much liquid you evaporate per hour)

Once you've done this, PM Stux and ask him if he can help you out.

Have fun!
PP

P.S. As for the hops, if you use a hop sock and pull the hop sock out five minutes after the boil, I can't see how no-chilling would make any difference,

So,

I used the evaporation estimate to determine you should have about 5.43L of evaporation. I picked some grains to match in the CE Calc and I set your volume limits to 25L for mash, and 20L for Start and End of Boil.

Kettle loss is 2.5L, which means to get 22L into your fermenter at 1.058, you need about 6KG of grain. And yu will need to do a 9L sparge.

You should get about 83.5% efficiency.

20.47L of Strike water, don't forget to reserve some. Pretty much you should end up at about 25L of mash.

Then you sparge with 9L in a 20L bucket.

Add spagre water back to your mashout water to get to 20L, then continue adding sparge water during the boil, to end at about 20L.

After you drain your kettle to the fermenter, you will need to add another 5.27L or so... depending on final efficiency.

The problem with the original Maxi-BIAB calculator is that it can't adjust for differening efficiencies based on mash thickness. The CE Calc uses an alternative approach.

If you have better estimates for your evaporation, or losses and volume limits, just update the values and the calculator will recalculate.

Thanks heaps PP and Stux.
You calculated my evap rate spot on - 3.6L/hour is what I've been getting.
Picking up the grain this morning, looking forward to a fun day of brewing ahead  .
Cheers,
Jake.
