Hole in the bag during mash

Post #1 made 12 years ago
I am brewing a Belgian Dubbel today, and while pulling my bag following the mash, I noticed a ~2cm hole in the side of the bag. Sure enough a fair bit of grain had leaked into my pot during the mash, and removal of the bag.

I used a stainless strainer about a dozen or so times to get out as much grain as I could, while heating to boil. Got out around 300 grams in total. I'm thinking it's not going to make much difference to anything...I'm whirlpooling now following my chill, so hopefully what's left will settle into the trub before I transfer to the fermenter. But it did strike me that leaving some grain in during the boil might be an issue...in terms of tannin extraction from the high temps, etc. Happy to be re-assured that the little that escaped shouldn't cause me too much grief?

unfortunately, i have been there and done that.
hopefully you did get out as much as the grain as possible. your are right, you don't want to boil any grain in the wort. don't sweat it. it's just beer.
Cube:
fermenter: Sourdough Spelt Ale, Classic Lambic, Oud Brune, Barrel Aged Belgian Dubbel
Kegs: Bob's Black IPA, Blanc Blond, Soda...
to be brewed:

weizgei,

I left my brew bag in the pot while I was on full burn raising the temperature towards the boil. I pulled the bag as the mash rose towards 170F (76C). The bag was touching the bottom of the pot and it melted a hole in it. I didn't see the hole at first. I hung the bag above the pot and squeezed. I squeezed the grain right into the pot! :idiot: The beer eventually turned out OK but I did boil some grain along with the wort. I was recording the boil for a video and got the whole thing on tape! Later this year you will see it here on this website! Don't worry! :nup:
tap 1 Raspberry wine
tap 2 Bourbon Barrel Porter
tap 3 Czech Pilsner
tap 4 Triple IPA 11% ABV

Pipeline: Mulled Cider 10% ABV
